Hi all,

Hope you can help I own a nokia 5300 express music phone and normally on my phone display I have a G or a E depending on where I am but today the redline went through it ( red lines comes through the G or E depending if a text message comes through) and never disapeared, with me thinking it was a text message coming through but no luck so I turned the phone off the clear it and then turned it back on to find the G missing, not sure if I can send text messages or receive them now without the G but does anybody know what this means?

Hope you can help

G E... what do these mean and where in the display are they?

Have you taken the battery off the phone and then put it back on again after a minute or two?

I think one means edge think it is like a signal thing, if I can't get a signal it puts the line through the G or E and the signal bar vanishes but today it has a full signal and no G or E!!

Is this maybe something to do with the internet on the phone maybe??

Have you paid your bill?

It's ok guys figured it out it's something to do with the WAP/Internet on the phone just means the net is not active or something like that.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Fluffy bunney - Won't be long till I have to top up the phone so thanks for reminding me

Depends what area you are in 2g, 3g, HDPA, I would imagine if you get a red line through it means no signal.

G is a sign for GPRS

E is a sign of EDGE.

Im not sure that having those symbols there mean that you are connected to either GPRS or EDGE or just in a coverage area, depends on the set up of the phone and the exact symbol.

GPRS and EDGE are circuit switched, in that they take up 2 or more timeslots of the base stations transmitter. If you send or recieve a text or phone call, this connection drops while you get the call/text and should re-connect when ended.

I would suggest you go into your phone settings and change the GPRS access to "when needed" rather than "always". You will get better battery life if you do this.

GPRS been on or off in no way affects texts.

Tomo1971 - I never knew that the GPRS drained the battery I had assumed that it was a feature of the phone that stayed on, so I will be doing that to get more battery life.

Many thanks for letting me know of this.

Same applies to 3g (otherwise known as UMTS) phones, if you dont need or use the faster data speeds offered with 3g, or do video calling on a regular basis then go to the network settings menu and change it to GSM/2G only. If you are on the network "3" you cant do this as the feature will of been removed by them.

PS, although not as technically knowledgable as some, I am a telecoms engineer and work on the base stations for the mobile networks and I like my gadgets! so anyone want to know anything I may be able to help.
