So, how much are these worth, then?

Featured Replies

Hello, all,

I have a couple of PC's that I'll be selling soon, but I've no idea what they're worth. Can anyone give me a clue?

Machine no 1 was hand built by me (ex computer hardware engineer, so I've a vague idea which end of the screwdriver to hold!;)). AMD Athlon 2800+ with 1.2 Gb of RAM, 160Gb IDE hard drive (the motherboard does support SATA), DVD rewriter and a Soundblaster Live! card with the Livebay (I think it was called -brings all the audio ins and outs to the front panel). Video card is a Raden 5200. All in a full tower case, with combined floppy drive and multi format card reader. I will include a full, legal copy of XP.

Machine number 2 is a vanilla (heavy!) desktop case, containing a Gigabyte motherboard with dual 1.5Ghz Pentium 3 CPU's and 1Gb of RAM. It has a 40Gb IDE hard drive and a CD reader. Video card is an ATI of some sort -not sure of the spec. It used to be my Suse Linux box, but I can also install a legal copy of XP.

Any ideas of what I should ask?

TIA,

Phil

Probably not that much for the first one. £100 maybe.

These machines might be worth more as parts. Dual cpu boards go for not bad money on fleabay.

The sound card on the first one is unusual too. I used them in a school I used to work at. That might be the sort of thing a musician might look for.

I'd check fleabay for the current price of individual parts and tot that up against what you think you might get for whole machines. the price of postage might put people off buying a whole box so you're restricted to your local area.

:iagree: - I'd strip them for parts. Same principle as older cars really - you're more likely to get sales and more reasonable money, from people on eBay who just need the odd part here and there, to fix a problem or upgrade a particular component.

I have to agree with the other comments on here.

I must confess I earn spare cash buying other cheap good quality PC's from eBay and breaking them for parts with Free P&P ;)

Trouble is, I really don't have the spare time to pull 'em to bits -just want to get them out of the way!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Phil

I have an original Escom Petium P60 found in the garage crap sorted this week.

I once sold a motherboard on ebay for more than I bought it for new. I was young and naively e-mailed the bidder telling them I paid less, wasn't sure it was worth what they were bidding and asked if they were serious about their bid - was aghast when they replied that they knew and were happy to pay that much as they were supposedly the best over-clockable boards around and no longer available new.

I never bothered trying to sell my old AM486 100mhz or my PII 233mhz as I know they're worth more as doorstops.
