trw steering rack leak - new seals?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2001 1.9tdi elegance with a steering rack leak. Is it possible to replace the seals in this or is a new rack required?

ETOS parts list shows seals part number 6e0 419 199

I understand that very little fluid, if any, should get into the steering rack boot. My rack obviously has a serious seal problem on one side. Even with a new boot tightly fitted, if the steering is turned full to one side (to compress the boot) fluid is forced out at a considerable rate.

I have tried 'stop leak' fluid but no use.

Thanks ColinK

Sorry forgot

If I want to buy a used steering rack - do all pre 07 fabias have the same TRW rack (I know some have a different make).

If I phone a breaker that is not familiar with fabia, where on the rack is the TRW name?

Thanks Colin

Hi there!

Have you made any progress on this? I too have oil leaking out of my steering rack boots, just noticed it, not funny. The fluids level is intact, so the damage must have happened recently. I don't think the seals can be replaced, though I only read about this on other cars, haven't found anything on the matter on these forums yet.

I read in another thread that there are two types of steering racks, TRW and KOYO, the same two brands that there are power steering pumps. A TRW pump then probably requires a TRW rack and vice versa. I think the pump's differences are easy to see, whereas the cap will differ. It clearly says TRW on my cap, so that might be the easiest way for the breaker to see if he has anything for you. I have no idea if all TRW racks will fit any TRW-pump tough, maybe someone else knows?

Edit: I always make edits, gah. I just came to think about it.. I lost the power steering about two (or was it three already?) weeks ago and I have been driving with the car anyway. Does anybody know if driving without the PAS could have damaged the steering rack, or if it might make the rack force fluid through the seals? Or are these faults unconnected?

/Antonio
