Gearbox oil type - really that crucial?

Featured Replies

After doing some searching there appears to be no real concensus on which oil to use in my gearbox when getting it changed.

I take it with it being a 6 speeder (with a fair old bit of torque going through it) it's still not that crucial unlike the engine oil which has to be 505.01 for the PD bit's and bobs?

I'll be taking it to the usual place that services it (cos doing it all on my back is never pleasant) which is a BMW specialist used from my Beemer days and so use BMW compatible tranny oil. I assume this will be sufficient?

Reason I'm thinking of getting it done is it's done 56k now and the shifts aren't quite as smooth as they used to be. I know from past experience that an oil change can make things a little nicer in this department.

Any opinions welcome. :)

it is special stuff IIRC.

I got mine from the dealers (Dm kieth) but i am sure mike at eurocarparts would be able to sort something similar.

Hows the car running? Your putting some miles on  nearly as bad as me. Bought the Volvo with 46k on 3 weeks ago..... its now got 51k on

Ah, ok. Just as well I asked. :D

What quantities are we talking? I'm at ECP on Saturday anyway so may ask Mike whilst I'm there.

Car's running great otherwise. Remap still never ceases to put a smile on my face - not only does the car now feel adequately poky but the economy is mind boggling and that's not even trying. :D

Best thing I've ever done. Needs a Jabba RARB though. Not only is the Whiteline one rusting but I think it could do with being a bit stiffer at the rear - still a little too understeery. Need to pay off the kitchen and one will be on the cards.

Then I want a Parrot handsfree kit and so on and so forth..... :D

See you in the Volvo every now and again - good looking car I must admit.
