Indicator clicker problem

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a strange problem with the indicator 'ticker' the device that makes the clicking sound when you indicate.

After indicating left or right, the clicker keeps clicking, even though the stalk has returned to the off position and the indicator lights have stopped flashing.

Its most noticable on the motorway when changing lanes, especially if you push the stalk over enough to indicate briefly, without letting the stalk latch into the left or right positions.

As with all the best problems, it is of course intermittent!

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

Hmm, I had this problem on an old Nova I had a while back, sister in law's first car.

I solved it by selling it on (lol) but I suspected a dodgy relay.

Sorry, not much help I suppose but perhaps my point is to check the relay first?

Welcome to the site btw :)

Redundant quote deleted.

The cause of this problem is metal fragments in the column switch. When the contacts wear a bit, metal frag leaves a conductive track in the switch which is sufficient to keep the relay clicking, but not enough to operate the lights.

The proper fix is a new switch (available GSF) which involves wheel and airbag removal. A better way is to remove the column shrouds, put an old towel under the switch and empty half a tin of WD-40 into it whilst working the switch to wash away the metal.

It usually works.

Used to work as a taxi driver and all the taxi's that we had had the same problem and the way we resolved it was to remove the "ticker" unit from the dash itself and remove the switch from the unit. Or spray WD-40 between the indicator stalk and the steering wheel.

Hope it helps mate:thumbup:

Thanks chaps, invaluable advice.

I will have the shrouds off and WD40 the switch.

Cheers

Exactly what I was gonna sudjest, good thing about electrical cleaner is it evaporates away completely, Had same prob withs the wifes 306 indicator switch, cleaned it once and its been fine since.

If you havent got cruise control its a good excuse to retro fit it and get a new stalk while your at it :)
