DSG - more info please

Featured Replies

can anyone explain how the DSG differs from the Audi tiptronic system, in practical terms rather than technical ones. i understand it is a twin clutch system. is the skoda version different form the VW version as hasnt the VW only got 6 cogs and the skoda one has 7 ? why on earth do you need 7 - surely 6 is enough. is the box used anywhere alse in the VAG group. I am suspecting i may find it hard to locate a 1.8T DSG for test drive as most dealers will be ordering the "fuel of the devil" diesel as demo vehicles. thanks for your help.

DSG is a sequential manual transmission with 2 clutch systems, one for "odd number" gears, and one for "even numbers".

Tiptronic is a means of allowing the driver to provoke upshifts as well as downshifts on demand on an automatic.

Of course, this can be complicated by the use of automated clutches on what are basically manual boxes.

so does the DSG have an automatic mode as well ? ie can it be put in drive and driven like and auto ?

what i am getting at is what practical differences will i notice as a driver using a DSG vs tiptronic . i use the paddles quiet a lot on my tip so figured the DSG might suit me but i woudl like an auto mode as well.

Yes it can.

The 6 speed gearbox is the first DSG gearbox, that the Octavia uses, the 7 speed on the superb II is the new 7 speed box. The main difference is that the first DSG gearbox used wet/submerged clutches, wheras the new one is dry, probably more efficient. The 7 speeds will aid economy by reducing cruise RPM's.

Iv'e just got an Octavia II 1.9TDI DSG elegance estate, and I love it. The DSG does not pull away from a standing start as fast as a torque converter auto, but the gear changes are amazingly quick!

I want one myself, Passat is favorite right now to house it in, best way to look at it is a box that the ecu is reading together with what the engine is doing and removes the need for you to push a pedal and pull a lever, in real terms you end up with an ultra smooth automatic experience with a fuel consumption just over half way between a manual and a full auto box, all from two manuals working side by side being controlled by computer. hth.

Another main difference is, that the older 6 speed DSG can handle up to 350Nm of torque. Whereas the newer 7 speed DSG can only handle up to 250Nm of torque.

In simple terms

DSG - Manual gearbox shifted automatically.

Tiptronic - Automatic gearbox.

Having recently tested a DSG-equipped car... I will be looking for one when I can afford it!

Both myself and my colleague both agree that the TSi DSG will be a reasonably strong seller given the emissions and fuel consumption are pretty good and it is a fair chunk cheaper than a 170CR DSG.

We will certainly be ordering one as a demo in the near future but it won't be turning up for quite some time.

Agreed, as a company car driver I have put a quote request in for the Elegance 1.8 DSG (plus three other marques), the CO2 of 168 is extremely competitive vs competitors.
