New brakes - getting very hot!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I changed the front pads on my Felicia 1.9D two days ago. The entire wheel seems to be getting hot and there is a burning smell after normal driving. The pads are not binding - I can turn the wheels when they are jacked up.

Is this normal for new pads?

Please help - I'm a bit worried about driving it..

Theo

P.S. I had to do this because of an intermittent squeek noise - on inspection just one of the pads was worn down to about 1mm the others were fine. They were supposed to have been changed after an MOT in March along with the discs but they obviously forgot one! Also - there is NO way the discs are new - I should have checked earlier but had no time and you shouldn't have to should you? It was a small private garage, I need to give the guy my opinion of his work and try to get a refund.

Sounds like the caliper piston, slider or pads are sticking. Did you clean up the caliper and sliders?

Hi,

the pistons moved ok and the sliders moved ok too. I didn't clean them though. The brakes are not binding.

Is it normal for them to be hot for a while after a change?

Thanks.

No, and certainly not to the point of smoke. I'd be tempted to take that caliper off again, clean and grease all contact points on the caliper, clean and grease the sliders (clean with brake cleaner spray, grease with brake grease or copperease if you can't get it- but brake grease best), and see if that's better.

Check the discs for run-out too, but if they don't bind, that's probably OK.

They don't smoke, but after driving the whole wheel is warm. I'll do what you say.

Thanks,

Theo

Cool. Use copperease, not normal grease (though I think you know that), and as little as possible.
