Oil Question...

Featured Replies

As i've read, it appears that the vrs requires specific oil blah blah blah...

I just had my car serviced and they put in some 5w-30 super synthetic. I questioned this as i told them beforehand that it had to be 5w-40 vw505.01. I have been told that the oil they put in exceeds the minimum standard and that it is a better oil. They charged me 29.99 plus vat for the oil itself.

So, is this correct? I'm expecting to be bombarded with "it has to be 5w40 505.01!!...", but is this really the case???

After reading some reviews on that grade of oil i found that it is suitable for turbo charged petrol and diesel passenger cars and that it is fully endorsed by VAG and exceeds the minimum standards. This grade of oil doesn't seem to be at all endorsed or recognised by this forum however.

Is it the wrong oil, or are we all running 'minimum standard' oil when there is better stuff out there???

As far as i understand it, the 505.01 specification refers to the oil's performance under specific circumstances, in particular the stresses imposed by the PD engine's injectors. Other oils MAY protect as well or better but there would be no way of knowing for sure until your engine started to wear!

Unless the garage can prove that the oil they used meets the 505.01 specification, I would insist that they drain it and use a correct oil, then show you the evidence that they have done so.

Take it back and request he drains and re-fills it with the proper stuff. If he refuses mercilessly beat his punk a$$ with your 5w30 coated dipstick until he changes his mind.

Like people here say, it has to be 505.01 or get them to change it.

I heard it's to do with the operating stresses due to the injection system on the camshaft.

If in doubt, it ain't worth leaving the incorrect stuff in or it can lead to increased wear I would have thought.

What was the make of the oil then?

I would think that the reason that the 501 spec oil comes up more on here is because most people use it as requested by VW. I never had my turbo replaced by a main dealer but I told the chap and he looke into it and showed me the can afterwards to prove it, which I accepted.

The oil you read about may not be for the PD engines but endorsed by VW for other engines in the range like the SDi Diesel.

Just a bit of advice, if if it is the wrong oil get it out as soon as possible and replace it with the 505.01 stuff.

... I questioned this as i told them beforehand that it had to be 5w-40 vw505.01.

Well no actually; it just has to be the VW 505.01 standard (or a later one but that's another story).

Take the car back, get them to drain the oil and put in oil that has "VW 505 01" on the tin. Don't get into discussing viscosity numbers and how one viscosity number might "exceed" another as it is meaningless.

[Look up VW 504 / 507 spec here afterwards.]

I'm off on holidays now - I hope you get it sorted.

I heard it's to do with the operating stresses due to the injection system on the camshaft.

That's the one, specifically the pressure at the cam lobes at full contact.

Where did you get it serviced after?

If your really worried and your not getting any joy with them let me know and Ill tell you where to get it for £23.99 and help you replace it.

Wouldn't say i'm worried as such. I've done a bit of research and it appears that 5w30 oil is used when you're on variable servicing. I also heared a rumour that the dealers are using this stuff anyway as 505.01 was the standard a few years back and has now been superceeded.

I questioned the garage and they are adamant that it is the correct oil. The car is running very nicely as well.

The viscoscity is almost irrelevent as long as it meets a minimum spec of 505.01 (Which has now been superseeded)

Was in my local Skoda dealer for a litre of oil to top up and was sold elf Solaris LLX which is 5W-30. The person at the parts counter told me this is the oil they now use. After reading the above threads I checked out Oil, lubricants, lubricant, solvent, engine oil, synthetic oil - TOTAL Lubricants and checked Solaris 5W-30 oil. It clearly states that this oil can be used in all but 2 VW engines (RS and V10TDi). Hope this helps

This appears to be true after i spoke to Skoda where a technician said that they now se the 5w30 stuff.

He said that as long as the 5w30 bit is right then the oil will be fine. So looks like it's goodbye to the 5w40 PD oil.

Getting the right oil for your VW Group motor can be a bit of a nightmare, I used to work for Halfords and whenever there was a query regarding oil for them I used to go on the Castrol website where there's a "Which oil should I use" link which was really helpful!

I was under the impression that the deisel specific oil recommended for the diesel engines had a formula designed to reduce the amount of smoke the car produces, the 5w30 longlife/non longlife oil doesn't as it's suitable for petrol engines too.

Dunno if this is correct, apologies if I'm talking b@ll@cks. :o
