Colour Coding?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone could tell me how hard it is to colour code Black Plastic to the Silver used on the Fabia VRS? i ask this as i am looking to Colour Code the outer black bit of my grille Silver as the rest of the car (some of you may have seen the pictures of my car and also commented on its grotesqeness lol) Although i like the black i do think it looks better with the outer done in silver. So any advice/tips on how to colour code it, cheers.

hey, best advice is to sand it back to bare plastic, use plastic primer and give it a few coats and allow to dry, then spray with new colour, also allow to dry and give it a godd few coats of lacquer...hope this helps

Cheers for the advice mate, what grit would you recomend for sanding it?

Don't use grit - use sandpaper! it's less messy...

you can buy a set of sanding sheets at halfords from 400 to 1200 i think these will be ok

I sprayed the dash to my Escort a few years ago. It's quite easy, but don't do it if you're planning to need to drive the car as it'll take hours of drying...

when i did my interior i dried it in a cupboard with a fan heater, takes less time to dry

I rubbed mine down with scotchbright? That grey ruff stuff, not as rough as sand paper, you just need to key it slightly, not you dont need to rub much, then use plastic primer, paint and a laquer. Best to paint it in a warm place with as little dust as possible, any wee dust marks could be flatted out and polished back up.

I think you can safely say it's a unique car at present. I don't know of any other silver owners who have had the chrome body coloured.

Looks good. :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Cheers

Dave.

Hey, i would like to do the same to the chrome bit on my mk1 octy vRS grille.

I have a spare grille and would like to have a go at colour coding it myself to match the black magic paintwork.

I have no experience of colour coding so would appreciate it if someone could write me up a list of items i will need to be able to do this.

Spare grille is already split down into 3 parts just need to get started.

Few things i need to know:-

  • Which kind of sandpaper do i need to get the chrome off?
  • Best kind of primer to use
  • Where can i get black magic paint from???
  • Best kind of laquer to use
  • How many coats of each product?

Sorry to hi-jack your thread, just thought it was appropriate as it comes under colour coding.

Cheers guys!

For the paint job I'll give you 10/10 but that "badge" ruins it. It's a Skoda. I personally think it should have a Skoda badge there.

Cheers for the replies and comments guys, im well chuffed with it. The things you will need to colour code your grille mate are

* Can of Plastic Primer (i used plasti-grip plastic adhesion)

* Can of Clear Laquer although i havent laquered mine yet, i put it on to see how it looks as is as sometimes laquer isnt needed due to certain paints curing different ways. i advise to do the same before laquering it

* Some wet and dry sandpaper get a 400grit and a 320grit (start with the 320 then go onto the 400 to give a smoother finish)

* Can of black magic paint (ring up Skoda with your registration and ask for your paint code, then go into halfords and give them the paint code and they will mix it for your car and put it into a spray can it costs around £10)

How To:

* Try to get all the shine off it by starting with the 320 wet and dry and then when its a sort of dull silver rather than a bright shiny chrome use the 400 wet and dry to smooth it a bit more and take even more shine off, whilst your doing this used some warm water to clean the bits you have rubbed down to get the bits of dust etc off and also use the wet and dry from time to time when wet to make it a bit smoother.

* Once its a dull silver you need to make sure the grille is dry and about room temperature (not cold and not hot) Lie it on its back is the best way to spray it now as when we hung ours up, it accidently pooled at the bottom and dropped onto the rest of the paint resulting in a restart of the proccess haha.

* Now go over it with the primer ensuring you have covered all areas and dont be too generous with it as you dont want it rippling etc. Leave to dry.

* Once primer is dry, give it a few coats of the paint, once again dont be over generous as you dont want ripples etc. Once dry, compare it to the car and then decide if it still needs a laquer or not. if it does then do the same as you did with the paint, give it a few coats, not too generous and allow to dry.

Hope this guide helps.
