How difficult to change a steering rack, and other pitfalls

Featured Replies

Looks like I will need to change my steering rack soon (not confirmed) and in readiness would like to know the dangers and pitfalls of such a job. It "appears" easy enough - dropping the subframe seems to give good access. I also assume that a steering rack out of any PAS equipped fabia would be fine.

Possible problems I envisage are the hydraulics - I would imagine that they are probably "one hit" pipes, so some bits might be needed brand new from Skoda - anything like gaskets or O-rings, if they're involved.

copper washers for the hydraulic pipes

new pinch bolt for the column to pinion shaft

the usual array of new subframe mounting bolts

as to whether all the racks are the same , dunno , but bear in mind that the VRS may have a different rack due to wheel size/sports suspension

Look at the parts list for the furby there appear to be 5 different racks so make sure you get the right one.
