Windscreen chip - too small?

Featured Replies

Got hit by a stone on the way to work this morning, resulted in a small chip on the windscreen, say 2mm to 3mm in diameter. It's not cracked and nor does it have any cracks petruding from it.

Can this thing be repaired, or does it need to be bigger? Can get it done free on the insurance, but didn't want to waste their time if they were to turn up and just say "live with it".

Cheers

Is it a chip, or more of a scuff? Considering my 0% success rate in terms of chip repairs, I wouldn't even bother unless the top layer of glass had been punctured / flaked off...

It's a chip - has made a "pit" in the glass which you can feel if you run your finger over it. Only thing is, it's not all that big, but it's in the line of sight.

I think the MoT criteria for chips in the line of sight are unhelpfully vague on that front, however if it bothers you at all, you should look at getting it done. Just prepare yourself for the possibility that you end up with a new screen anyway, 'cos as I say screen repairs aren't always successful, and they're certainly not invisible, so might still distract you anyway...

Thanks, I'll give the insurance a ring tonight.

Get your insurers name - phone them and check who their authorised repairer is and pop in for a check up. I got mine done last week. Repair was not 100% invisible - but outer surface is now smooth and will not damage the wiper blade, and the chip is greatly reduced.

I popped into AutoGlass forst and they quoted £55; but got RAC via my insurance company and done FREE and no claim recorded.

If you ever have to replace a windscreen, be careful that your insurer doesn’t just use the cheapest bit of glass it can. Rarely do they repairers use OE windscreens. One way to get over this is to be very specific about your windscreen. For instance make sure the fitters know that your windscreen has a certain colour shade strip, that it has a specific VIN/Chassis Number cut out in it and that you have automatic wipers./lights (the large lump glued to your screen). Obviously this isn’t applicable to everyone, but it can mean that the fitters will have to go the OE for a screen. Well I hope so as I have a large crack in my screen.:(

Autoglass use the OE screen manufacturer but it isn't OE stamped.

Made by pilks though, so the same as the OEM one down to bandind, cut out, auto everything mounts and the rest :)

BMW reckon they aren’t OE and they weren’t trying to sell me a windscreen either. Around £600 to change at a BMW dealer:(

Plus they need a day and a half to 'cure' it and check it doesn't slip

Used to be that chip repair could be done anywhere -but insurers seem to be cutting costs, getting deals with companies like Autoglass /RAC etc -so best to check with you're insurance co - of course with the rubbish road repairs today -"surfacedressing " - it might pay if quotes are similar to check that the chip repair vcan be done to suite you - some companies operate a window of hours ,others all day .Don't know about Autoglass -only waited for hours for them once and changed company -but if there's an RAC place near you - you've got a choice -pop in or call them .

OH-yes -pop in ,and grab a sheet of their "emergency chip patches " - get it on as soon as you can -keeps the weather out till the repair -and the cleaner the chip ,less you see it afterwards .

They are not OE as in they don't say BMW on it, but they are made by pilks for skoda as the OE skoda one was.

You can just make the point to your insurance company that since the car had a BMW one they are obligated to return your car to the state it was in before the incident. As such this requires a BMW windscreen.

I spoke about this very matter to my friendly service chappie and even though I have BMW insurance (surprisingly cheap although I had to pay it in one go) the deal with my insurer is that Autoglass do the replacement with whatever glass they see fit:(. I have no rite to BMW glass (the real insurers are Tesco I reckon) and Autoglass wouldn’t use BMW glass unless they had no alternative. The OE glass is slightly thicker than the replacement stuff from Glass repair companies according to the BMW chap. I have to stress he was not trying to sell me BMW glass as he said it was very expensive for them to do.

I thought you used to sell cars? ;)

Oi, the nice chap was telling me not to go to BMW for the replacement glass. :P

And? You, of all people, should know just how much BS sales staff might talk in order to get a customer to take a particular course of action!! ;)

Had a crack on my Fabia screen when I bought it, was quite annoying so rang my insurance they sent an RAC guy around to repair it.

Unfortunatly when he tried to repair it the repair failed and the screen cracked even more, so a new screen was needed at a cost of £30 excess.

They came the next day and although I'm not sure the screen was OE, it had the coloured strip along the top, and the cut out for the VIN number.

Screen was made by Pilkington.

The screen took around 1-2 hours to fit and I couldnt drive the car for a day or so whilst it cured.

The job was done around a year ago and have had no problems whatsoever. The job was done in a very professional manner on my driveway.
