Stupid gearbox mount :(

Featured Replies

Ok this is driving me mad now.

Still getting a knocking noise when dipping the clutch changing through 1-2-3 (unless booting it), when dropping off and on the accelerator and going over knocks in the road.

Just got back from the dealer whos greased the fecking thing (After a diagnosis session where they couldn't find anything) and said it looks fine... seemed almost silent on the way home, but just been out again and its back exactly the same as before they greased it.

Does anyone have any ideas... is it worth trying to replace it? Been given a quote of £89 to get it replaced from local stealer. Could it be something else?

Starting to really depress me

Might be your DMF on it's way out.

Would that make noise going over bumps though? It seems to do it over bumps whether the cars in gear, out of gear... engine on/off.

We greased mine DIY stylee but absolutely drowned the fecking thing in a tube of silicon grease from maplin.....it went everywhere and the noise has been gone now for about a year.

Again, the dealer couldn't see anything wrong and said it was all fine. Pah.

nope - the mount sounds dodgy. How old is the bush as it could be knackered whilst still appearing intact.

A weak dogbone could also accentuate it by causing too much engine movement on and off the throttle. I changed mine to be certain.....only £30.

I had exactly the same problem mate and i have replaced the Console bush which was nackered with cupra ones and now "touch wood" its all fine.

Cars about 5 years old, only had it for 1-2 months now so no idea if it was replaced previously but i doubt it.

The engine does seem to move around a lot in the engine bay when its turned on, but settles down 1-2 seconds after. I mentioned this to the dealer and they seemed less than concerned about it.

I also asked for a quote to replace all mounts... think they quoted about 230. I don't really have the skills/tools to do this kinda thing on my own :(

I paid about £230 for the console bushes to be replaced (Cupra ones) but that included a 4WA too (Awesome in Manchester). The N/S mount is not known to fail as such but the knocking is very common - mine did it badly at 40k upwards, for a good 6 months before I got pi55ed off with it and greased the bugger. Try greasing it yourself before you stump up the ££ for a new one. The dealer may have been conservative with the lube...

Well, it went back to the stealers to see if they could find what was up.

They apparently lubed up the other 2 mounts and guess what... silence.

So maybe it wasn't the gearbox side mount that was causing all the grief?

Not sure. Kinda feel like this is just a temporary fix though but i'm again well chuffed with the staff at faintree garage :D They did this for free
