Seen as my Octy VRS is 4 years old and has 40k on the clock,i`m going to get the cambelt done,and the water pump uprated to the metal impellor one at the same time.

Just wondering how much you guys have paid for this job???

Indie repair garage - about £400 for cambelt and new metal pump. They quoted £200 for just the cambelt, but had a problem getting at the water pump (I think I'm unlucky, jinxed or both) - a lot of hours went into it anyway!

Changing the water pump will also mean the coolant, so remember that when getting some quotes. I guess that sometimes the pump might get stuck, but a quick tw**ting with a piece of wood should soon get it sorted

Had my cambelt & water pump changed by SJB Autotech in Basingstoke a month ago for £341 including all parts & coolant. They are a VAG independant and used original parts, including a plastic waterpump. They tell me that providing the water pump is changed at the same time as the cam belt it won't fail. The problem arises when the pump is older, say 80k+ miles.

They provided great service and I'd highly recommend them

We do the cam belt , water pump etc. at £295 + VAT (£346.63 all in)

Unfortunately Manchester is a bit far for me from Folkestone, though a decent price. Basingstoke is useful to know as my brother lives there.

Personally I'd always opt for a metal pump. Having seen the images on the thread linked above, I think I'll still change the pump again if I have to do the cambelt again, just as a precuation.

I have had the water pump replaced on my car both times too

I do high mileage and have done the water pump on both occasions

Folkestone? Have you tried Whitehill in Gravesend? Independent Skoda specialist, just had over £1000 of work done with them. Recommended, I travelled from East London for them to do my 40k service and belt etc. Included cambelt plus metal water pump for around £340-350 as I remember. My plastic one (original, 37k) came out in 2 pieces, I had no idea! I'd definitely go for the metal upgrade while the belt's being done.
