Vent Control Knob - 180 degrees out

I have noticed in my wifes Fabia that the Vent Control Knob on the central control unit is 180 degrees out. Simple fix I thought - pull it off, turn it round a re-affix. Wrong. Wont go :( as there are plastic tabs that prevent the wrong fitting. Demist blows air from dash vents and vice versa.

Any ideas why this is the case? What does the rotary control activate? I guess the control unit has been off before and some one has reconnected the cable(?) at the rear 180 degrees out?

Any one been in this territory before?
