When did Skoda change from the PD unit to the CR?

Featured Replies

Actually, this is a question asked by Skippy41 in another thread and something I would like to know.

I'm thinking of changing my 2.0 PDi Elegance for the diesel vrs (estate). Until reading the forum I thought they were 170 bhp PDi. Are they now CR and if so has it altered any characteristics of the car?

Thanks.

all new orders for the vrs are cr version now.

they are a totally different drive to the old tdi, and much better imoa. they are quieter the power comes in like a petrol turbo making it easier to pull away giving it beans!

better CO2 too

Cheers for that - very interesting about the driving characteristics. I'm surprised the quoted figures (HP etc) can be the same with a change to CR.

Not being an expert in CR, why is that?

CR TDI VRS started arriving at UK dealers around mid july-ish 08

I got mine July 25th 08

I can't give you and comparison with the 170 PD TDI

but I had a PD 140 for 2 yr and 33000 miles

All I can say is yes the power delivery is really smoother

You can still spin the wheels easy though :)

it pulls well right upto the rev limit

And its unbeliveably quiet compared to my PD140

IIRC road tax only £125 at the mo

Just thought with it being apparently more efficient the figures would change (a bit).

inexeng. Thanks. My present car is the 140 PDi so being quieter would be a bonus.

I see, so you expected an increase in horse power? If that's the case why did the VW Audi group run with the PD engine in the first place?

Any news on 140hp CR engine comming?

I didn't know what to expect. Maybe more HP, less torque or vise-versa or both increase... I just thought that a change in method would change the output somehow. Why VW etc used PD - again I don't profess to know. Perhaps the CR was in development and/or other manufactures were producing quieter engines compared to the PD

The CR is in the new Superb.

Is the turbo the same size on the CR?

Wont be comming in the near future. Even the 140HP TDI Superb is still the PD. Only the 170HP versions (Octavia and Superb) are fitted with the newer CR.

I heard they have problems to achieve the future emissionstandards with the PD. The PD is the more economic engine, costs a bit more to produce though. So it was easier for the VAG group to make newer (cheaper produced) CR engines to cope with future emission laws.

New Audi A4 already comes with 143hp TDi CR, that has replaced 140hp TDi PD

I know, even the Golf V already has the newer engine, as does the passat.

But Skoda is still a bit of a stepchild of the VAG group. :thumbdwn:

The quality of the 140 CR engine in a loan Passatt recently was a major influence to order an Octavia vRS with the 170CR.

OK, not a direct comparison, but it was quiet, smooth, powerful and returned around 50mpg on commutes of about 20 miles. Very impressive all-round performance and economy.

The new VAG CR engine, 170 does have the same hp/ps and torque figres as the older PD 170 IIRC

But the less powered one is 143 in CR form as to the 140 on the PD engine

I think its how it was printed in the brochures

The CR 170 is also found in the Audi TT TDi too

the issue is build times. vw are suffering from some mega long build times at the moment partically due to certain components being used throughout the vag group. i was told that the change to CR has to be gradual so that they can slowly change the factories over without causing a massive slow up of build times.

theres only so many of the new engine that can be built at the moment
