Flickering Headlights. Where to start ?

Featured Replies

The wife has a 'W' reg 1.4mpi with the flickering headlights. We are not getting any warning lights on the dashboard, just the flickering.

I want to methodically go through all the steps to try and solve this problem.

So my question is-

What should I be checking ?

Cheapest options first please....

The search function on the forum or the kitty gets it.

Thanks for the advice. Leave the poor kitty alone:orb_no_no

I've been through most of the threads on this subject and I am totally confused as the problem seem to have other things going on at the same time. I'm going to check the alternator and electrics. I just wondered if there was any other cause for the effect.

power steering pump is going i would get that checked first... i had mine done took me ages to find out whats wrong with it!

good luck

Hello, and welcome to the forums - if you search on "power steering flicker lights" you should find what you're after. It's a very common issue, and I don't think it's terribly expensive to fix.

Seriously though, the first thing to check is the battery, in most cases this problem is just due to a duff battery not supplementing the electrical circuit whilst the power steering is in use. It is quite easy to check the current across the battery with the ignition off and whilst the engine is running to check. After that check the charging circuit, in particular the electrical connections to the alternator and then finally the power steering angle sensor.

Thanks for the advice guys.......

I have an Octavia 1.9tdi. Would it be worth trying the battery from this in the wifes Fabia ?

Its weird, my lights dim slightly when using the electric windows or indicators, I just assumed it was because the power is being split in a series.

I thought this was the case too. My vRS does this, my Polo did it, my Dad's Octavia does it and the vans in work do it. I thought it was normal.

I figure it is.
