Advice on coil spring, please..

Featured Replies

Hi all,

One of my rear spring is creaking badly and I discovered a tiny section of the coating pilling off.

Am I right to think it's had it. The advice has been to replace in pairs, but do you think I should also replace the front pair?

As money is really tight at the moment I am thinking of doing it myself, and I'm seeking advice in buying the most cost effective spring. Is it worth buying 2nd hand? Skoda's or eibac/koni etc. Please advice and many thanks.

mines creaks and thats with all new round suspension... Just a fabia thing..

Yours springs will be fine but if you want some ive got 2(vRS) used OEM ones 37k miles, or i have 4x Eibach springs, 10k miles on them, £80 collection only though from dg12 5hq. Lowers vrs 25mm and non vrs's 40mm

Just put a touch of WD 40 on the springs, check them from time to time and you should be fine IMHO.

Also I don't think the VRS springs would be good for the 1.9 TDI 100 as they only have a 5 speed box not the 6 speed box of the VRS and as such the weights would be all wrong.

I would not have thought that the rear coil springs would be the root cause of your creaking - so I'd not bother changing them. If you are worried about rust weakening them I'd give any nasty looking points a good covering of Hammerite. After that I'd try spraying a strong soapy solution on the pivoting points to temporarily lubricate them(to help pin point the source of the creaking) - its probably the top mounts that are causing the creaking - I think that this has been covered already (I've not had that problem - yet). Try the search function.

If or when it does come to buying new springs, I'd suggest you only buy new and buy a pair - I would not think that there would be any point in changing the fronts if they are not causing a problem - its just best to change both sides if one side is u/s - ie balance the suspension up.

reply:It was a lot noisier when jacking and lowering.

Many thanks for all the replies.
