Fuel?

Featured Replies

Im just about to take a Trip to Great Yarmouth and since it's a fairly long drive I was going to put in some good fuel, any Opinions On Shell Optimax or Super Unleaded? (1.475hp) All I know is that It takes a little time for the ECU to adjust from 95-98 RON, or so I was told, lots of overtaking pesky caravans, so any real performance advantages?

ouch!!! did you say CARAVANS!!! ;)

Moderators note : there is to be strictly no caravan arguments in this thread :P

I tow with a octy vRS.........you've got to catch me before even thinking about overtaking

TOO LATE!!!!

...if the ECU adapts to 98 RON - I know my 1.6 is tuned to use 95 RON, and putting in 98 RON does nothing except cost me an extra 20p or so.

Wouldn't bother with it myself under the circumstances. :)

One advantage Optimax does have is it has additional cleaners in it, but I doubt there will be a performance increase :)

I sometimes tow with a Merc E55 AMG estate (the rather healthy supercharged V8 one).........you've got to catch me before even thinking about overtaking :D

Yes It's A Furby 75hp, I was told by the guy in the Shell station was that it was 98.6 Octane fuel, It cleans Injectors and removes fuel deposits, Theirs was a couple of Pence over Standard Fuel but he said you would get better economy. He also noted that you wont get over-night performance, sometimes you have to drive for a few thousand K before getting better low down power and performance, he said that a long road trip would be beneficial to the engine, Oh and as for the comments about caravans, They Do cause mayhem on the Fork Road on the way!, Sorry Had to be said :)

Ah, things are starting to fall into place now... ;)

So you have to put a few thousand miles worth of their more expensive petrol through your car before deciding that a) yes, there is an increase in performance because you're trying harder and the engine has a few thousand miles of extra wear on it, or B) no, go back to ordinary fuel and never see the extra money you paid again... :)

Rob.

If the ECU can adapt to it, then it should only take 2 or 3 tank fulls to notice a difference. Alternatively, simply run the car drive, put some Optimax in and then reset the car's ECU ;)

Hmmm, My Fabia has done over 20k, doing nearly 0.5k a week now, lots of trips to work, so My car is pretty "Loose" anyway, How many miles can the 1.4 do before it gets the Major problems?

It'll still get looser from now on - mine is getting better economy now than it did 20k miles ago.

No idea on how long the engine will go on for without major problems - assuming correct servicing and fairly sympathetic driving, it should go on for ages...
