rear side airbags

Featured Replies

can anyone advise / give opinion on rear side airbags. we are just debating if there is any reason why you would not want them ? they are not expensive . we have two kids, both still in kiddies seats. any pros / cons ?

I didn't bother with them in our car, as I was worried about the consequences to our daughter if they were triggered whilst she was sitting in the back.

She still uses a full car seat, albeit one designed for 5+ year old (she's 6).

From childcarseats.org.uk, we have the following advice:

Q: Can I put a child restraint next to a side airbag?

A: The testing that has been done so far demonstrates that side airbags will not cause injury to children in child restraints, provided that the restraint is fitted properly and your child is using it correctly. However, problems may arise with side airbags if passengers are resting or sleeping against the door. Some manufacturers have developed seats with added protection for side impacts - if possible, use one of these.

On balance, we decided not to take the risk. The car gets the 5 star NCAP without these airbags, so I'm not too bothered that we don't have them.
