The heck with the tutorials, here, this time in photomatix, you can do it the traditional way, take the original photo and adjust the brigthnes till it looks under exposed and save it as a new jpg, again and make it look over exposed save it as a new jpg then bring the 3 jpgs (the original,under exposed and over exposed one in photomatix from the generate menu) when it finishes batching them together you'll get a dark picture, play around in tone mapping with it and you should get something like this....

I didn’t say you couldn’t? I only mentioned that for the compression/dynamic software to work at its true potential you can scrape by with a single RAW file. The multiple image thing is jpg and I think of it as in the same was you need more than one viewpoint to make a 3D image so the software needs more than one image to extend the pictures dynamics. The RAW thing is a cheat for it’s system.
