Gear box drain and fill plugs?

Featured Replies

Was under the car today and decided to take some pics of what I think are the drain plug and filler plug on my gear box. Am looking to change the oil tomorrow or friday and don't want pull the wrong ones out.

Is this the drain plug?

And is this the filler?

Look like a 17mm hex os needed.

Thanks

Ian

Yep spot on.

But when draining also take out one of the T45 torx bolts that hold the black selector rods in, this will drain out the end of the gearbox and not just the diff.

You can just see one at the top right of your first pic.

and always good practice to check that the filler plug will undo BEFORE undoing the drain plug. Not unknown for people to drain gearboxes and diffs only to find the filler plug is seized and they can't fill it up again !

My fill plug is pretty corroded, doesn't lok like its ever been unscrewed  so im hoping a squirt of wd40 an hour before will loosen it up nicely

I need to do mine but got pulled a muscle in my back so wanted to know how much would it be to get the gearbox oil changed at a garage?

My gears seem hard to select to just wondered if a gear oil change might make it smoother. Its not that bad just feels gratey when selecting 1st and 2nd gear.

Use a dismantling lubricant, not a f***ing water repellant spray, if you think something might be stuck!!!

WTF!!! Anyway I've used WD40 in the past on rusty bolts and its worked fine, I thought it was ideal for the job  What would you recommend then Ken?

PlusGas. I've shifted bolts with it in minutes that 2 hours with WD40 couldn't move. Oh and you happened to catch me at a bad time earlier.

I know WD-40 usually works ok, but it is not, and never was, intended as a dismantling lubricant (The name is short for "Water Dispersant - Formula number 40" - Reference ).

The geezer who invented WD-40 found that it was very good for arthritis. Not many people know that!
