Day out with the D300

Featured Replies

I've finally found the camera i've been looking for. I know it's the photographer that makes the picture not the other way around but when I look back at my "old" pictures i'm finding the Nikon D300 has blown them into the weeds.

There's a huge difference in colour for starters, the images just look that bit crisper. I've also found my sigma 150-500mm is performing better. I've read the D300 can correct flaws in lenes and this certainly seems to be the case.

So this is the last rung of the camera ladder for me. The D300 with Nikon 18-200mm VR and Sigma 150-500mm is everything I need in a set up. Though I would like a macro and fish eye lens to play with in the future, I might add one to my Christmas list:D

Here's a few pics.

Nice.....you've tempted me now....where's best to get them price wise? What camera did you have before?

Cheapest big name firm I found was Jessops @£924 body only. I bought mine from Warehouse Express - Camera Accessories and Lenses, Photography Equipment, Canon, Nikon Digital Cameras It was a little dearer but I needed a flash gun and lens which worked out cheaper than Jessops as an overall package.

Warehouse Express are now selling it for £899:mad:

I was using the Nikon D80 before the D300.

Go get one, you won't be dissapointed.

HTH.

I can find it online at about £860 ish. I could do without spending £800, but it's just sooo tempting :(:(

Does anyone want to buy a D80 body?? lol!

Good price, who was that with? I like to stick with big names when spending that sort of money.

Put the D80 on E-Bay. I had mine for sale on here for £300 and got no joy. I put it on E-bay and got £400:D if you do as well as that your halfway there.

Those are stunning Chris. Amazing colours.

I know someone else with a D300 and it's certainly the sharpness and richness of colour that shows through. Glad you've found what you're looking for

Looks great. Guess I will have to wait 6 months or more before the 5DII is cheap enough for me to buy (if I am lucky) colours look great too by the way. Did you use a Polariser or tweak the pictures in a HDR mode?

IIRC I had the polariser on for the "Green Pelican" shot. The rest were taken without. No HDR mode.

Colour and sharpness were set at around 85% within the camera. I've had to do minimal post tweaking, just a dash of sharpening and a touch of positive saturation.

The Pelican with black background needed some work on lighting. He was quite over expossed as the sun was streaming over his white feathers.

The Cheetah required a little more work. He was quite far away. The Sigma 150-500mm is quite soft at the far end so he wasn't as sharp as I would have liked.

Loz, are you going anywhere abroad soon? The D300 has been at £800 at LHR for the last 6 months or so (but bit the bullet and bought a 700 instead :o)

I've just ordered the Tamron 17-35m 2.8-4. Apparently, it can be a bit hit and miss of a lens depending on whether you get a good copy, but at £150 it's dirt cheap compared to the proper Nikon one which has a four-figure price :(

D300 is great though - latest interface and great screen with newest features. I still think that if you want something wide, ironically, DX still seems to be an easier option and there are lots of new lenses out there specifically for crop format. I went full frame and was shocked at how much FX-lenses cost. But I guess if you get the "pro format sensor", you have to pay pro prices for glass.....

A work colleague has the Sigma 10-20mm (DC so only for crop sensor and 15-30mm 35mm equiv) and it's great fun :D

D300 is the camera I want to get next, I also really fancy the 70-200mm f2.8 lens to go with it.... One at a time I guess!

  • 4 months later...

Just been having a glance at these on the web again....why does the price seem to have increased now? Lol. Think I'll wait if they're gonna pull a stunt like that!

All Nikon prices have shot up, The Yen in Japan is very strong at the mo so it's costing US/European outlets more to buy them in, hence they sell them at a higher price:(

I just bought the 70-200mm 2.8 VR. I was looking at this lens just before Xmas and it was priced at £1150. It went up another hundred just after Xmas. I paid £1400 for it yesterday:mad:

Word around the camp fire is that lens will be going up to £1800 on 1st March:eek:

The only Nikon product that seems to have stayed the same is the D40 kit. My D300 cst me £950 its now selling for £1200+

Good if your selling, bad if your buying.
