about the tyre noise..

Featured Replies

There's been quite a lot of debate in here during the years about road noise on octy 2's.

Having owned a octy 2 vrs for the past month or so, I can certainly agree there's a lot of it. But I can also confirm that some of it may certainly come from using too high tyre pressures.

My car is equipped with the standard 225/45/17 rubber (potenzas in my case). I noticed a lot of road noise after taking delivery but just bit my lip over it, thinking this is what I bargained for. Then yesterday went to local petrol station and decided to check tyre pressures. The pressures were a lot over the top.. recommended is 2.2 bar at each corner for full load (4 ppl + luggage). The tyres were @2.3 back & 2.5 @front. So I dropped the pressures to recommended levels - Bada bing, Bada boom! Much of the road noise was gone.

I'm not saying this is the magic cure and you'll have an Audi A8 in your hands afterward, but it definately helps. You can notice the difference immediately.

So, check your pressures and go with the recommended values if you're using standard 17" or 18" rubber.

You are right, correct tyre pressures makes a big difference!

I had potenzas before, and wouldn't have them again! Long story, but they wore very quick & were very noisey from day one! The important thing with tyre pressures is to check them when they are cold. So a drive to a petrol station will warm them up & they will over read. You then reduce the tire pressure & if you check it again when cold, they will most likely be low!

Best bet is to buy an accurate tyre pressure gague & a foot pump and do the checks before you set off!

As tyres wear they can also become "more noisey", but my recent experience of having a full geometory check/setup has made a big difference too! So there might not be a "magic cure", but there's lots we can do as owners to improve things for our selves!

Enjoy your DSG!

in the most recent Whatcar? they do a test with different tyre inflators. you just set the pressure you want and the machine does the rest. might be a worthy investment. would definitely save me the effort when using a foot pump!
