changing the head unit on a vrs

Featured Replies

hi everyone, i'm lookin at putting my alpine head unit in, think its a xda 3000, what do i need to remove the standard headunit and put the alpine one in, tools, adaptors etc. Also is there a big difference in quality over the standard unit? Thanks in advance, chris

Do a search! Been answered MANY times before. Not sure about that model, but typically any aftermarket unit will sound better than the standard one.

thanks for the constructive reply

I just asked our friendly local dealer and they released the original head unit for me (it was a bit reluctant to come free as I remember!). You'll need a fascia adapter thing for your new stereo. I got mine from the same place that I got the stereo from, but I think you can get them from Halfords quite cheaply.

Do I need any adaptors for the harness? Also the facia adaptor replaces the standard jobby?

The standard stereos fascia is slightly bigger than DIN size, hence the need for the fascia adapter. You shouldn't need any wiring adapters - factory wiring plugged straight into the back of my new Alpine unit.

Thanks everyone, I'm off to the stealers.......

WHOA thats not quite true. For alpines (any probably all other after markets) the red and yellow wires need to be switched (live/ignition). On the wiring loom that comes with your stereo, there should be bullet connectors on the red and yellow wires. Just swap them over and test that your radio presets are being stored when you take the key out the igintion.

Get a fascia from the stealers, cost about £2.50! Most stealers will also take the stereo out for you for free... my local one did!

Sound quality may improve, depends on what head unit you put in :P
