Can alloy wheel be repaired (split in middle in direction of circumference)

Featured Replies

Son's girlfriend hit something with her front tyre on the Woodhead last night. On taking the tyre to a tyre fitters it could be seen there was a hairline split (running circumferentially) on the inside of the wheel (probably two inches long).

Can the wheel be rewelded (if done professionally etc) and would it be safe ?

The tyre, incidentally, was 'unharmed' but I've told her to get it replaced as the cords will probably have been damaged.

Similar question came up the other night actually. As I said there, I'd not be comfortable running a repaired alloy. I feel it would never have the strength it did when it was new.

What was the car and alloy, out of interest?

2004 Tigra Convertible (?) fancy electric roof. :o

As far as I know a Vauxhall standard fit alloy (I changed the wheel but it was p**ing it down and freezing so was in hurry) - but will be checking further.

Same wheel style?

No, but thanks for looking. Son was here and verified it wasn't that one. Wierd design - but genuine Vauxhall. He's told her similar to what I said + he'll look on eBay tonight to see if he can find a single wheel.

Taa :) for help

I wouldnt my self.

Val, never mess with damaged wheels or tyres, you never know what will happen.....

What wheel size is it? 17" or 18"?

I think they did a 17" Penta alloy for the New Tigra Hard Top.

Thanks for input everyone - enough info now

Wheel will not be repaired, and a new tyre will be bought too.
