'55 Octy II 1.6FSi Gearbx whine, low revs (sounds like its in reverse!)

Featured Replies

Just started to notice that when accelerating in 1st 2nd or 3rd, before the engine and road noise gets overpowering, there is a distinct secondary whine that sounds exactly like the car is reversing. It goes when the clutch is depressed which makes me think clutch bearings.

Anybody else with a petrol OctyII had similar experience or can anybody offer any better suggestions or tests.

Sods law is that the warranty has just expired!

Cheers

Difficult to say without hearing it. Gearboxes make SOME noise, it depends whether its excessive.

Clutch thrust bearing usually makes a noise when you depress the pedal.

Is it engine speed related (input shaft bearings) or road speed related (output shaft bearings). What happens if you knock it out of gear when cruising?

Gearbox bearings will often whine for many miles without harm - but get it attended to if it suddenly gets worse! Check your g/b oil too.
