1.9 diesel box on a 1.8t...

Featured Replies

Would a 5 speed diesel box from a Octavia mk1 fit my 1.8t engine from an Octavia VRS mk1?

If so, what would the ratios be like as I currently have issues where the 5th gear is revving too high! 70mph on the motorway is nearly 3.5k rpm!

I am running around 270bhp

Can anyone please help...

Mark

Could it be the clutch slipping? I just don't see how a problem could change the ratio

Thats a slipping clutch surely.

That mate is a $hagged clutch.....

The standard 5 speed box at 3000rpm is roughly 80mph from what I can remember.......

I should have said...

Its in a mk2 golf... only running 15" wheels... its not the clutch, its 70mph at between 3k-3.2k ish. We all have this problem running smaller wheels. It feels like it needs another gear, it is still pulling like mad at top of 5th but dont want the 6 speed box.. just a more relaxed cruising 5th...

I need better ratios than the 1.8t box offers... So would a 1.9 box fit and what are the ratios...?

Cheers

Mark

Not fancy an 02S then?

Im running (or will be) and 02J 1.8T box in my 1.8T MK2 Golf, not made my mind up if im going to run my 15" Speedlines or run 16" so i can fit 312mm brakes.

Thought about it but then you have no speedo drive for the speedometer!

The Ratios are not that great for the MK2 golf on the 1.8t engine either... The gearbox calculator on 16" wheels says you will be doing 66mph at 3500revs and 77mph in 6th...

All the earlier gears are taller which is not a good thing either... Ideally you want a taller gearing throughout, 1st 2nd and 3rd are not too bad for the 1.8t but could be slightly taller but 4th and 5th are just too short... Im toying with the idea of swapping 4th and 5th gear out of the 1.8t box for diesel ones...

Seems the best way to go about things as the diesel box has shorter gears in 1st 2nd and 3rd so that would be no use...

Brings me on to my next question... How easy is it to swap 4th and 5th from one box into another??

Cheers

Mark

Ahh not bothered about a speedo drive myself. Im running MK3 front axle with ABS sensors and custom dash.

Swapping the gears isnt a bother is you have the right puller to get 5th gear off, its a pain otherwise and you end up with a lot of busted parts.

diesel box is crazy long on a petrol and a waste of time in my opinion as on an octavia/mk4 golf top(5th is the same as 6th) is geared for like 250mph+

i take it you have a 210/225 engine in your golf then? :)

No it was an AUQ from an Octavia running aftermarket management and a K04 turbo, Forge TIP, Custom intercooler, BAM injectors, BMC CDA, Mk4 Fuel pump, Custom exhaust.

Making about 260-280bhp.

Bengie, im talking about the 5 speed diesel box, the ratios in the ratio calculator seem to give a good 4th and 5th speed... 3000revs in 5th would be approx 77mph... Seems ideal for what I want using the 1.8t final drive and the diesel 4th and 5th gears... top speed shows on the calculator at 6300revs to be about 175mph!?

I know the 6 speed diesel is too tall geared for the 1.8t. I have met Dez down at impossible performance and they have said the same thing about the 6 speed diesel... just wondered about the 5 speed.

Just depends whats involved with swapping out 4th and 5th gear...??

A gearbox removal and strip down to change 4th and 5th. Probably worth inspecting all the bearings and syncro rings whilst you are there.

nice, so basically a bam with a higher compresion ratio and slightly weaker rods(not that your pushing them)

i only mentioned the 6 speed as the petrol 6 speed has the same top end as the petrol 5 speed so assumed it would be the same on the diesels :)

2500 rpm on a 1.9 tdi in 5th is 76 mph on the sat nav

Hmmm sounds perfect! 2500 at 76mph... Might just change 5th gear out... could be the way forward... So anyone got a knackered 5 speed diesel box...??

if its possible to just change out the 5th cog for lazy motorway driving with improved economy I'd be interested. averaging 22-27(mood dependant :D) on the gas and hoping it will improve after remap, but a longer 5th would be ideal (never gonna red line it in fifth, as red line in third is enough to lose license!)

Hi,

Could someone please give me the gear ratios for the Skoda superb 1.9 TDI PD130 2005/05 please?

I just wanted to confirm my clutch isn't slipping. So with the ratios I can use one of those on line calculators to calculate the rmp and speed and check if it matches with what my car does.

I had to reverse up a steep hill the other day and now I am paranoid that I may have damaged the clutch.

Now I can't relax until I confirm everything is OK so any info on this would be really helpful!

Actually, reverse gear would be the best to climb a steep hill as the ratio is usually higher than 1st.

stick it in a high gear at low revs and floor it, if it slips then its knackered. if not then its fine :)
