i noticed that the cam pulley on my tdi is adjustable has anyone tried advancing or retarding the timing for better performance at all??;)

You will be adjusting the valve timing, and risk piston to valve contact if it's too far out. So unless you know exactly what you are doing, it should be set using the Skoda locking tool and not messed with. :D

This is playing with fire. The purpose of the camwheel to hub vernier adjustment is to allow precise camshaft positioning relative to the crank and to allow the tension to be applied to the belt without any locked-in torque from the camshaft.

The unit injectors have to be pressurised ("on the cam") for the whole range of timings over which the ECU will be demanding fuel and this is achieved by pegging the camshaft at TDC with the crank locked at TDC with VAG's silly over-engineered tool. (A pin in the flywheel like the PSA system would have been far easier, cheaper and more precise).

Changing the valve/injector timing on a PD is really asking for trouble.

I agree with you whole heartedly mate, mine are pegged up when i change a belt, the belt is then tensioned with the 13mm bolts loose then tightened afterwards so the slack is taken out.

I think the crank tool is pretty cool, two sorts now though as the later PD's have an oval crank pulley.

cheers guys the only reason i asked because on my 106 rallye i retarded the timing and upped the fueling and to get the best from it . i just wondered if this was possible for the tdi pd cheers guys
