Quick Oil Question

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just a quickie.

I need to top the oil up in my 03 Reg Ocy vRS.

At the moment the oil that's in there is a fully synthetic 5/30 oil, i checked this from the last time it was serviced.

I couldn't find any similar at the local motor factor so the guy had a look in his book and said that the car i have will be ok with fully synthetic 5/40. Is this ok?

I'm not too clued up on oil etc but will it be ok to mix?

Thanks

Bobster.

it needs to say the correct standard.

If in doubt get VW504 (5w-30) and put it in there as that is the current standard.

A search on here will reveal a more detailed answer to your question and also why the oil grade (5w-30) means nothing in terms of your oil choice.

Doh! nothing's ever simple :p

It's just bog standard AutoCare branded 5/40 fully synth oil. I can't see any VW standard markings on it :(

Ah well, was only a couple of quid.

Think i'll nip to halfrauds.

The Halfords own brand stuff is supposed to be good (I bought some a couple of weeks ago).

It'll set you back around £42 for 5L - it's in a blue bottle.

Yep the Halfords stuff is ok, otherwise if you prefer a brand they have the Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 oil that meets VW504 standard.

The car manual will tell you which standard you need, but VW504 replaces the older petrol standards for the long life oils, so you'll be fine if you use that.
