Can I change insurance company mid policy?

Featured Replies

I have decided that I am going to get the Octavia VRS. However I have just tried to get a quote from my current insurance company but they say they cannt quote. Where do i stand in changing to another company who will quote? Is this possible? Am i likely to get any sort of refund? They will quote on a 2.0TDI but want £1700 which takes the p a little bit as I have 7 years no claims and am 24. It is all to do with my postcode as I posted in another thread. My insurance runs out on my current car on 31st March 09 but i need to change my car before mid Jan 09 as it is dying and needs replacing before it needs, MOT, Tax service etc which will cost more than the car.

Thanks for any advice

Matt

in my experience, you may have to pay a cancellation fee, then take out the new policy with other company, and you forfeit the no-claims for that year..

Ah bummer, I totally forgot about the loss of a years NCB. Really stumped what to do now. I really want to get the VRS but dont want to loose a year I would be up to 8 years then. Grrrrr.

Thats very odd.

What insurance company are you with?

I had companies quoting me on a Honda Accord 2.0 without any fuss at 24/25

There will be a cancellation fee and if you have paid for the policy in a oner you will get a part refund. As you are mid policy you will in effect lose 6 months NCB however at 8 years it won't make a big difference.

The only problem with moving to a different insurer is that you will not gain that extra year of no claims bonus :(

As regards the cancellation procedure, should all be in your policy booklet/terms of business that the insurer would have sent you at the beginning of the policy. Some Insurers will keep a percentage of the premium which can result in a low refund.

You should be able to cancel without forfeit (except maybe seeing the month out) if you have been with them over a year (6 to be precise), I was 4 months into my renewal and cancelled, without forfeit. I asked why no cancelation fee, they said was because I was over the first year. So no probs. Could you afford to run the 2 (if legal?)

As for refusing to insure on a VRS my current insurer (as many others I believe) would only insure someone who was over 25 and had their license for more than 2 years.

Even tho Im 30 and had my license 10 years, My old insurance company still had to go to the underwriters to see if they could quote me on a VRS.But had no problem being the cheapest insurance for my old Volvo 850 2.5 20v when I was 23. I think anything withthe word turbo in the spec rattles their cages.

Thanks for all of your replies, my current insurance company is green insurance company, only because they were cheapest with my current car. I believe a lot of my high quotes comes down to my postcode as if i do a quote at my parents house it is reduced by a considerable amount. I might have to loose the years NCB, like a previous poster said having 1 less with 7 years at the moment shouldnt make too much difference. (I hope :) )

I had thought about letting the policy run out but if i dont have the car any more I dont know the legality of it, maybe Dan from Adrian Flux can shed a bit of light on it. :)

EDIT ***** Bit of an update, I just tried and online quote with them but changed my age to be 25 and now they will actually quote me (a realistic price aswell) Unbelievable, its only 4 months until im 25, surely it cant make that much difference. *****

It might be diff for others but it didnt for me, I got quoted for having 9 years ncb, took out the policy then realised the proof I had said I only had 8 (I took the current year), spoke to the insurer they said as long as its over 5, it doesnt matter and wont change the costs

If the difference is only 4 months, and your happy with the quote from your current insurer (as you were 25), give them a ring and explain the situation, dying car, new one on the horizon, etc. Say you would love to stay with them, but youll have to move on if they cant offer you something, it will depend on how keen they are to keep your business, the prices arent necessarily set in stone, my old insurer came back with 3 diff prices before I told them what I had got, although they said they couldnt beat it, the fibnal prie was 200 less than original asking. Its worth a try, a little gentle coersion never hurt, the worst they can say is no and your no worse off. The only problem being is that 25 seems to be a big drop point for most insurers. So it may be they cant, not wont, offer anything.

As above I thought you only get a discount for up to 5 years no claim bonus and after that the % discount is fixed i.e. full no claims discount is after 5 years. This is certainly the case with direct line etc who only ask for proof up to that limit. Hence you will not be losing any discount by switching, just a little cas for the cancellation fee. I also believe there could be legal issues having car insurance on a car you do not own or having 2 insurance policies on the same car.

I will give them another call later today see what they can do. I will post back later when I have some more informtion. Thanks again for all of your advice.

Matt

Will be worth trying to speak to someone higher up the food chain in the company.

The call centre people can't often do anything other than read from scripts.

Customer services will be a start. Might work might not.

I sorted out a postcode problem that way.

Now I am really ****ed off. I had set my heart on getting the Octavia VRS. Phoned my insurance who said, we will not quote you on this car until you are 25. Phoned Chris Knott who said a similar thing but said I need "at least a years experience of driving this sort of car" I don't get it. How are you supposed to get this if they wont insure you. I have 7 years NCB, no motoring convictions. Why will no one insure me. What is going on. I am fed up, I have to change my car before January as it will cost too much to repair, tax mot etc. I dont want to have to get something then change it in march when i am 25 and my insurance is due for renewal.

If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate them

Buy a Citroen Saxo...

Seriously though, what about trying someone like Adrian Flux? They are, I have to say, excellent at "unusual" requests and "unusual" cars...

Useful comment, thanks!

Have you thought about buying a cheap car to cover the couple of months until you turn 25. See a lot of older Fiestas etc in the private adds with MOT etc. As long as they start/stop/run OK then would last a couple of months until you can get the car you want. Will probably be able to sell it for similar money at the end of the 3 months as cars that run seem to find a level and do not drop after that hence it may not even cost you anything.

So as no one wants to insure me for a reasonable price until im 25, (4 months) which i find quite ridiculous, I have done what the previous poster suggested and have put a deposit down on a Furby VRS. I am quite looking forward to getting it now. I pick it up on the 15/12/08. This should be a nice stop gap between getting the Octy VRS in March. Its not really the way i wanted to do it but at least I get to drive a cracking little car for a few months. Thanks for all of your advice and help.

Matt

I'm with Directline, just renewed for about £800 fully comp for a Mk1 Octavia vRS, I'm 22, with 3 years NCB. Last year was about £1300-ish

Direct line want £1623 on 2.0 TFSI VRS that doesnt even include the business cover i need. I think it has a lot to do with my postcode to be honest. Thats me at 24 with 7 years NCB protected.
