Hi

I got 1.9 diesel x reg felicia first of all had cold air coming from heaters when driving then i noticed temperature was rising. I checked expansion tank and no water, when i put water in, heater given off heat, then when i check expansion tank was empty and also i run the car idle for about 10-15 minutes and the fan doesnt kick in.

Any advice would be gratefully recieved

Chances are you might have a water leak somewhere.

If you put water in and you got heat from the heater then the pumps fine as it's circulating.

If you put water in and then start the level will go down, so you have to put more in.

Idling for 10/15 minutes wont make the fan kick in.

If driving around town and the fan doesn't kick in about halfway/ 3 quarters somewhere up the gauge then prob the rad fan switch has popped, the fuse or thermostat.

Thanks for reply, when i had the engine running i cant see water leaking anywhere, also different matter when i am driving and i brake to slow down or stop there is a knocking noise coming front passenger side, wheel has been taken off, changed discs and shoes and it even passed mot.

Whatever you do don't use plain water, especially if you're in the UK at the moment :)

no i am using anti freeze and i have checked fuse and replaced it, so it might fan or thermomstat then

For the fan to kick in there needs to be hot water going over the fan switch, so the hose from the thermostat to the top of the radiator should be hot. If the thermostat is functioning correctly there should be a rush of hot water as the thermostat opens to let water flow (rather than just warming up slowly).

so if i take the car for a run then open the bonnet and feel the pipe and its hot does that mean thermostat is working and the fan is not. If pipe is cold its the thermostat has gone.
