Gauges on sisters car

Featured Replies

My sister is having intermittent problems with her rev counter, and fuel guage not working. The rev counter often sits at 0 for a lot of the journeys she is doing, and the fuel guage is often permanently on full! (Not bad in theory - unfortunately it does use fuel! :D)

Has anyone got any ideas how to fix these? Is it a simple enough job? My knowledge is sort of average so might be able to sort it for her but need some pointers ;)

Not my part of the woods, but should I venture a guess I would say there's something amiss with dashboard's connection to earth (since the "input" for fuel gauge and rev counter should be separate). One can of course object and say that a faulty earth connection ought to lead to more symptoms

the revs are measured my the amounts of pulses it receives either from the coil, altenator or computer all the instrument panel share the same ground and fuel gauge is fed by a fuse, so check fuse and yellow cable from coil or alternator and ground (for that one you'll need to remove the panel i think

Thanks for that guys - I will give it a shot at the weekend if I have sometime.

ok to seal this one out...

Got me a tester, took out the dashboard and called a very savvy guy well turns out that the guy sent me to another guy who is a genius with the skoda electrical and he confirmed what i suspected.

The panel is very dependent on a constant clean current so it has its own "power supply" its basically two IC , some resistors a capacitor and some Potentiometer, IF YOU SHORT OWN OF THE WIRES COMING FROM THE DASHBOARD IT MIGHT FRY THIS...

so thats why my fuel gauge is busted, will fix it tomorrow
