Need advice on sale/ scrap - Scenic Non-Runner

Featured Replies

Hi all.

My girlfriends Dad has an R-reg Renault Scenic, it is turquiose blue, the 1.6 model. Not sure on the mileage.

Looks pretty much like this

The problem is that we think it requires a new engine.

It starts and runs, however it stalls without reason after a few miles, and gives no indication.

He's spent about £900 on it on a new water pump etc, in the past 6 months and the mechanic has failed to sort the problem, coming to the conclusion that a new engine is needed.

Anyway he now wants rid of it, as it is sitting on the drive with no tax, and he doesnt want the expense of putting a new engine in it.

The bodywork in excellent condition for a car of its age, and so is the interior, with no dents or scratches, and no rust that I can see.

What would you advise he does with it?

eBay?

Scrap? There are adverts in the paper "£100 for any car" but surely its worth more than that?

Help appreciated.

Joel

I'm almost certain it's fuel, HT ignition or vacumn circuit related. Look for posts with my user name and "fuel filter" in the Favorit, Felicia et al forum to see further discussion.

Alternatively, since it's a Renault, just scrap it! ;)

I'd say check the HT leads, spark plugs and the coils/dizzy as these will often cause unburnt fuel and some cars have systems which will cut the engine to look after the expensive cat in this case.

If the car isn't using oil or coolant and isn't mixing them either, then I'd say get the engine pressure tested at another garage as I think the new engine without saying why it needs one is a very odd answer from a garage.

TBH I am just going on what he's telling me, which isn't a lot.

I just think he doesn't want to spend any more money on it.

Sell it for spares or repair, ask £200 and accept £100 on the free ads I think then if you want it to be gone.

:) Flywheel position sensor, about £20, GSF do them.

 gets my bet

Stick it on ebay spares/repairs

If he wants rid of it throwing more on parts prob won't help!!!

If it's something like that well worth a shot I'd say.

For £20 if you fix it he can sell it as a runner for about £800-1k

I'll need to get a bit more detail on the actual fault from him, cheers though.

How difficult is this sensor to replace?

This is what you're after (other sources new and used are available! ;) ) It'll be at the rear of the engine, pointing at the flywheel (surprisingly!) Probably an axle-stand job...
