Which new monitor

Featured Replies

Well, it looks like i am going to get a new monitor for christmas. The big questions is which one?

I want a 24", i play games and do a bit of graphics/web design work, so far i have narrowed it down to these following two (unless any other suggestions);

Samsung SM2493HM: Samsung SM2493HM 24" TFT Award Winning Monitor 1920x1200 10000:1 400cd/m2 5ms VGA/DVI/HDMI Height Adjust Speakers Glossy Black 3 Years Onsite Warranty - Ebuyer

Dell 2408WFP: Dell 2408WFP 24" TFT Monitor 1920x1200 3000:1 6ms Silver/Black 4 Year Onsite Manufacturer Warranty - Ebuyer

Having never owned anything Dell i am a bit reluctant, plus Samsung are well known for their screens. But am i going to notice much difference in the dell for the extra money?

Got one of the Sammy monitors in the family and it's a nice monitor :)

Vote for the ultrasharp Dell here :)..

Had it side by side with offerings from Samsung and IIyama and loved the clarity over those.

As far as dell go , I bought my first PC from them last year inc the 24WFP , when the 24 had issues they swapped it with a nice 27 for me ,....so big thumbs up from me. The whole customer service experience from them was very good , and i was sceptical at best before hand.

( although my 8600GTS GFX card from them has just went at 15 months :( )

In most respects you get what you pay for with the monitors. The connectivity is great , the arm / flexibility is great. But they are pretty expensive if all you want is to say - i have a 24".

:)

I do have this available, if you're interested?

Steve

I got the Dell S2409 recently - 1920x1080 instead of 1200 and it's excellent.

It doesn't seem to be available at the mo , but the 23" version is worth a look too - £155

Thanks for the offer wardy its certainly something to consider!

tbh i am leaning towards the Samsung, after reading reviews and even seeing this video YouTube - (HD) Dell 2408wfp vs Samsung SM2493HM input lag/colour tests the lag on the Dell seems to be a real issue. While the colours might not be as good as the Dell, i can live with colours that are not as good, i dont think i would live with that lag!

Although the Samsung uses an older style TN panel  whatever that means!

I've been using my new Samsung SM2493HM for a week now. Paid just under £300 including VAT/Delivery. It is far better than the Dell 2408. I wondered about the colour balance but it is superb. No dead pixels.

Been researching a bit recently and am going to go for a dell 2208wfp. I found a couple against but generally most revews were very positive and it won a shootout against samsung (don't know which one) in a gaming mag.

Dell is guaranteed dead pixel free which is a plus.

General view on it is very good for gaming, however, colours are not spot on for photo editing.

In terms of response time I seem to recall reading that the samsusng ones are not as good as qouted due to the way the monitor works.

I had the advantage of comparing the two for myself. My company buys everything Dell, so I had the 2408 for work.

I am a software engineer so my needs maybe different. Here are my comments in order of importance to me.

1. Clarity of text - very good on both but the Samsung had the edge.

2. Colour Balance - both came with a colour profile file which worked well with my Nvidia graphics card. Out of the box, the Dell had the edge initially, but the gap closed to almost nothing when I used the utility that came with the Samsung.

3. Video Playback - the dell was OK but some artifacts were visible when watching a football video. The Samsung wins hands down for me. The colours and motion were superb.

Where did you get it from for that price?

Glad you like it. For the price, I don't think there is anything to beat it.
