1.4 MPi - I think Alternator is on it's way

Featured Replies

Right.

I've been noticing a slight loss of lighting when I use electric windows or turn heater fan on it's maximum, also, when turning steering wheel. I've noticed that the headlights go dimmer and in few seconds they regain themselves. Didn't think much of it. Yesterday I came home late from my friend's place and as I went to open the garage doors, I noticed that headlights were "twitching" after about every 10 seconds. And I heard a slight squeak from the engine bay while lights "twitched".

Now, I don't know how correct my English is here. I hope you can understand my problem and maybe help me out. I've heard that alternators cost a fortune and I really don't want to put out such a sum of money now.

Common problem mine does it my dealer has ordered me a new steering angle sensor but some people say it is just the battery or alternator.

My interior light dims if i turn the wheel or press the electric windows... the headlight kinda dim too when i turn the wheel... but it has done this for the two years i have owned it!

Mine does this too. How old is the car? and the battery in it? Is it something which has been happening all the time any maybe you have just noticed it now? Not sure about the slight squeaking though. Might be a loose alternator belt rather than the alternator itself.

Have just replaced the battery in mine after 8 years. One morning it wouldnt start. I could have maybe jump started it and gave it a long run to charge but I figured after 8 years was worth a brand new one to avoid an unwanted breakdown.

This seems to be such a common problem for the Fabia, dodgy steering angle sensor or not. Is there any merits in replacing the alternator with a more powerful one?

Car was bought in 2002 as a brand new one. The battery was changed 3 years ago. I changed the alternator belt in May, tightened it 2 weeks ago.

I have noticed the dimming headlights for some time but I've never noticed the flickering of headlights while idle. The squeaks that I heard were coming from headlights as it sounded like an induction current which happens when power loss happens.

I haven't had any problems starting the car, even on cold mornings. Also, I've made some long runs this week so the battery can't be empty.

The car has only done 28k miles even though it's 6.5 years old.

Mine does this too , never seems to cause a problem , it had a new battery in 2006 (6 years old) and apart from when the original battery failed , its always started first time. I just see it as another one of those Fabia traits , and live with it!!!

PS im talking about dimming when turning the steering , never noticed them flickering when idling.

Brutality - I would say that rules out the battery and the alternator belt then. I think the dimming of the lights on operation of the windows is definately normal but the flickering when at standstill and squeaking noise i have never had. I will have a listen tho and report back if I do hear this.

Ok. After having fun (had some early new year's fireworks ) with the alternator, battery and all the wires, I've discovered that EVERYTHING is working fine. Except the problem still persists. Now, power steering started to have more problems and now I can only think about the steering angle sensor. I'll order it tomorrow, but nor from stealers and I might need the part's serial number first. Could anyone tell me that?

Btw, could such flickering of lights bugger off some more sensitive electrics? I mean the ECU or other sensors?

Also, I thought of changing the power steering oil. WHich oil should i use and what do I have to do to drain the old oil?

Thanks in advance.
