I think Skoda's argument would be that no DSG is planned because superminis are typically town cars where diesel makes less econonomic sense, and the current 1.6 petrol auto is good value whereas adding a £1000 dsg to a already comparatively more expensive diesel (over petro) means a pricey supermini.

On the other hand, there are lots of diesel Fabias sold, in the UK at least, and VW group does seem to be moving towards all autos being DSG, with it being fitted to the 120 bhp 1.4tsi petrol engine (in the Octavia in Europe, but not in the UK yet, if at all.) And the new Ibiza will aget a dsg petrol I believe.

It's likely the 1.9tdi will be replaced by a new common rail 1.6 TDI about the middle of 2009, but I don't know when this will reach the Fabia.

I hope this helps.

The now old 6 speed DSG would not fit into anything much smaller than a Golf but the new 7 speed DSG box will. Whereas the 6 speeder's dual clutches were liquid cooled via an oil bath, the new 7 speeder has a 'dry' arrangement. Less energy lost to friction and it will now work with the current trend of stop/ start technology. This transmission I feel sure will eventually be available in the Fabia - the forthcoming new Polo plus the latest Ibiza are already earmarked for it.

In the new Golf the 7 speed DSG is available in two petrols, the 1.6 102ps and the 1.4 TSI 122ps. The 2.0 ltr oil burner keeps the 6 speed version.
