setting the ignition time with a strobe gun is a good way of setting to the engines specifications, is good to set ignition this way for diagnostic purposes if the engine is doing rough idle , poor fuel economy, little torque or any engine problem.

if engine is in good condition then ignition adjustment can provided max torque or max fuel economy.

for max fuel economy turn the dizzy counter clockwise until engine rev no longer increase then move clockwise until smooth idle and rpm is accomplished then (without tightening the dizzy) do a test run in carburetor engine you will hear knocking on load in injector model accelerator response will be severely affected, turn dizzy clockwise until acceleration is normal or in carburetor model until knock are no longer.

for max torque turning the dizzy clockwise while revving the engine, when revving the engine star to loose response, turn back counter clockwise two degrees after that. the accelerator will have great response the cluck will feel gripping like crazy and you'll find going to max speed with little effort on the accelerator.
