Which Engine to choose?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I own a 2006 octavia II 2.0 tdi dsg in L&K trim level. I wish to change my current car for a Superb and dont know which engine to choose whether the 1.9 tdi pd 130 or the 2.5 v6 tdi? I do around 15000 miles a year split 50 50 between local and motorway miles. I also tow a caravan and need a auto gearbox. So all your help would be welcome .

Thanx in advance.

I would take the 1.9TDi 130PS over the 2.5TDi V6 any day. That's after having both engines in the same type of car.

The 1.9TDi 130 with a remap is much better than the 2.5 V6 and a lot, lot better on fuel. Also cheaper to maintain when it comes to big services and cambelts etc.

Agreed - totally. Think very carefully about the auto box too; if you can possibly manage with a manual there are savings to be made in running costs, maintenance and purchase price.

The torque of the higher output diesels makes a conventional auto box very lossy and sometimes unreliable. This is why VAG developed the DSG box for their later cars.

I tow a heavy trailer with my 130 PS Superb. It works really well and gives excellent performance and economy when unhitched. Avoid also the 2.0 diesels.

rotodiesel.

After much reading on these pages I decided to buy a 1.9TDi 130 and have no regrets, I regulary get nearly 50mpg on combined usage.

I also tow a caravan which is why I decided to go for a Superb diesel after test driving nearly every one of its competition out there and nothing compared, not even the Mazda6 or the Mondeo.

My caravan's MTPLM is 1454kg which is slightly over the 85% guide but well within the 1600kg quoted by Skoda and on my travels I have always got over 30mpg and on one perticular holiday which was mostly motorway milage I got near 35mpg which was better the my old 1.8T Superb on a normal run!!!

1 thing I have found is due to the mid range performance of the 1.9TDi engine and because most of our caravan driving is done at 60mph It is alot more economical and feels like the engine is alot more comfortable to stay in 4th gear than use 5th gear that always feels underpowered as its only doing just over tickover at about 1000revs.

From my experience I would deffinately recommened the 1.9TDi but saying that I have never owned a 2.5TDi so my opinion is a bit one sided.

Useless post this one, sorry, because I'm just going to agree with everyone else.

I have a 1.9TDi 130bhp and am very pleased with it. Ok so I threw a dragon tuning box on mine and upped the power a bit (probably by about 30-40 bhp) but even without it the car isn't exactly a slouch. However my experience is from using my motor with a tuning box on it.

As for economy I've driven 3,500 miles since owning it and average 44mpg and I have a heavy right foot. On combined journeys I get roughly 50mpg .... up that to 55mpg if you step off the throttle a tad. On a long motorway jouney of 300 miles I got 58mpg travelling at around 85-90 ..... errrr I mean 70 of course.

As for performance, from 30-70mph takes around 4 seconds ... not too shabby. Ok so it'll never leave a Porsche quaking in your rear view mirror but it's surprisingly rapid for a sub 2 litre oil burner.

Thanx all that replied, will still like some post`s from owners of the 2.5 v6 tdi.

There a few owners on here who love the engine, Having driven both over long distances. I must say i like the 2.5 better, just sounds much better. It is not the best engine for service or repairs, due to it being more expensive, also car tax will be higher. But if it were me, i would have the 2.5 :D

But the 2.8 petrol are a lot cheaper  but thats another story ;)

Thanx mdk1, can someone explain to me why the 2.5 v6 tdi has such a low amount of torque 195 @ 1250 RPM, where my 2.0 tdi pd octavia has 320 @ 1900 RPM, and the 1.9 tdi pd has 310 @ 1900 RPM. I tow a caravan so would like large amounts of torque under my right foot, and is there a cheap way of increasing torque on the 2.5 v6 tdi.

Thanx all again in advance.

The V6 is an old engine now - the PD's (and of course the newer CR versions) were more advanced and higher performance.

I'm surprised this hasn't erupted into a full 4-pot vs V6 debate - but what's certainly true is these are by far the most common engines (look at the users of this forum, for example) - and hey, a hundred thousand lemmings can't be wrong, right? ;)

Looking at this logically - I think Rotodiesel is the closest user here to what your requirements are... and as a result I'd go for the 4-pot.

As for a "cheap" way - only method is a remap, and the V6 doesn't respond well to them. Plus, increasing the torque through an auto box is asking for trouble.
