02J gearbox linkage adjustment balls-up!

Featured Replies

I thought I'd have a bash at adjusting my shifter today, as I sometimes struggle to get 1st and 3rd. Looking at the Haynes manual it seemed very simple, so I tried it....

I wish I hadn't! I initially managed to shift all the gears to the right, putting reverse where 1st should be, and losing 5th! After about 5 more attempts, I have all the gears back in pretty much the right place, but it's less than right!

It's now no longer a straight shift down to 2nd from 1st, I have to move the stick slightly to the right to get 2nd from 1st. 1st and 3rd feel much better oddly, but I need to refine it a bit me thinks!

Could someone tell me where I'm going wrong please? I could really do with some help here as I've had a pretty crappy day.

Currently, I'm compressing and turning both locking collars on the cable ends, then pushing the selector shaft down hard, until it sort of clicks down. The little plastic locking pin doesn't seem to do anything useful. I pulled it out completely at one point. But it never seemed to lock anything?! Then inside the car, I put an allen key through the lock-out holes. I then released the locking collars, and pulled out both locking pins. But it's not right.

I'm guessing I'm not locking off the selector shaft correctly...?

Cheers guys :sorry:

I think to lock the selector shaft you have to pull it up and turn the locking lever not push it down. HTH

Iirc the locking lever can broken quite easliy if it's left in position.

Maybe yours is knackered like I belive mine is ......lol

I checked with Skoda, you have to push the shift shaft down, and turn the locking pin clockwise as your pushing down on the shaft.

I can't see how turning the locking pin does anything, it just looks like a spazzy bit of plastic!!

Yeah sounds like it could be bust!

Do you know if i can use something else? Like an allen key or drill bit to lock the shifter in position on the gearbox.

The process I used seems to be correct, it's just this spazzy locking pin bit that hasn't gone to plan!

Wonder how it works....
