vag problem, help please...

Featured Replies

Helo everyone, about 15 months ago i bought my first octy vrs 1.8t 20v turbo, she's been good but about 10k ago i had her cambelt done and a new water pump whilst she was being serviced (60000). A recent diagnostic due to engine management light illumination found two possible sources;

1. (16395) P0011 035. A Camshaft position(Bank1) Timing over-advanced or system performance.

2. (17704). Malfunction in cooling system.

Before she was serviced she had two or three coil packs fitted but that all seems fine now.

she does run slightly rough when cold and the temp gauge doesnt go much past 80 degrees but i atribute this to seasonal ambient temps, does anyone have any advice that could possibly save me a small fortune or at least help me get the light off without having to start replaceing parts willy nilly... any comments would be appreciated thanks to all.

The car should always get to 90 eventually, although it does take longer in cold weather. If it doesn't, then the thermostat is faulty.

thanks for the quick response, it was a skoda dealer so presumably vag, the code they gave is slightly different 16395 P0011 035, 035 being the only difference, the dealer seemed to think that it could be a hydraulic pulley that is driven or tensioned (sorry, im no technician) by the cambelt which they usually suggest changed with the cambelt an extra 200 quids worth, mine was still under warranty from renault dealer so they didnt advise that, is this a common fault could it be my problem and will it go boom? thanks again, sorry for the long windedness...

Hi,

TBH i am not sure if it would be a common fault on the Octavia Vrs. Many different people would recommend changing tensioners and water pumps at a cambelt change. But the cost can add up, this extra cost obviously has to be weighed up against the cost to repair/rebuild the engine should any one of these items fail. It may be worth a second opinion from a reputable Vag specialist in your area.

Thanks LG just fitted temp sender, do i have to get light extinguished or will it go off on its own? also how easy is it to do a cambelt inspection, could i do this myself or would u recomend the dealer do it...

Thans again for your advice, cheers mate...

No problem mate,

I would assume light will stay on because fault code will be stored. You could get dealer to reset light or if you know someone with Vag-Com they could do it. As for a cambelt inspection i wouldnt say you dont necessarily have to take it to the main dealer, take it to someone reputable in your area or even the garage that carried out the cambelt replacement.

thanks again mate, will do. done around 250 miles steadily since light came on so im thinking it must be the thermostat otherwise it shold/woulda stopped badly by now, thanks once again...

hello again, just wondering if you know anything about thermostats and how easy/hard they are to fit/replace, as u know i did the temp sensor a couple of days ago and for an extra £14+vat i thought i might fit a new thermostat before gettin that bleeping light extinguished, any help would as always be massively appreciated thanks again..

Hello mate,

Not sure how easy or hard the thermostat replacement in the Octy vRS is. I wouldnt imagine it would be that difficult.

Check out this thread:

Did you get the light put out after installing the sensor? Has it come back on?

EDIT: I see you havent had the light extinguished yet. Is the gauge still reading high?

hello mate, thats the trouble, it doesnt get hot, the needle wavers aroun 70-80 degrees bit never gets to 90 where i personally think it should sit.

To get the light put out costs £35 without a diagnostic and i dont see the point when it could be a £14 thermostat, its booked in for the light to be extinguishedon friday and im fitting the thermostat tomorrow (thurs), fingers crossed, touch wood once thats done and the lights re-set all will be good once again, failing that its time to start looking at cam/crankshaft sensors, any idea aboout those and their ease of removal/replacement?

ongoing thanks again mate...

Why don't you contact a VAG-COM /VCDS owner on here to get the light put out and a scan.

Im sure you will get both done for a lot less than £35.

VAG-COM owners map

I can see the logic about changing the thermostat when they are only £14, but the whole point of fault codes and scans are to take the guess work out of repair work.

Google (your fault code) '17704 Octavia vRS' and see what the common faults were.

Fault codes are great but on there own they are only a point in the right direction, with a bit of research you can usually pin point it down further.

HTH.

Like mentioned before fault codes are just an indication as to what and where the problem could lie. Personally i would have replaced a part then got the fault codes erased and see if they or any other codes come back. Only then would i look further into the situation. Take one step at a time. You could be worrying about replacing parts unneccesarily.

knowing me and my luck its totally warranted, but as i said i didnt want to pay for the light to be put out and then it come back on so i decided i'd try do the thermostat since theres no way of me checking the old temp sender when i replaced it but i get your point and im gonna look real dumb when the stat is stuck open which it must be for the gauge not to get to 90, u live and learn and now ive got a temp sender spare for when it really goes... thanks for all your help buddy its been invaluable.... thanks again...:)
