superb electrical faults,wipers/windows,aircon etc

Featured Replies

I have had intermittent fault whilst driving, majority of warning lights on dash light up, no wipers, aircon, electric windows. Speedo & rev counter fails + fuel gauge etc.

The indicator for plug heater occasionally flickers on for a second .

When this first happened the engine would still run o.k.& also restart as req'd. The fault would not re-appear for weeks, until last Sunday. The engine caught & then cut out and all the above faults occured.

I replaced the ignition switch (although i did not think this was the full answer).

I also read many threads on this site to get a clue as to my problem.

My thanks got to Rotodiesel & Bagpuss for their advice re water ingress, i checked my drainage ports(seem o.k) & the comfort comand unit in passenger footwell( dry as a bone).

I was wondering if there is a problem with main fuses that are supposedly in the engine housing area. I am led to believe that they supply plugs?.If so , where are they located?

HOPEFULLY, SOME MEMBER MAY BE ABLE TO HELP ME OUT WITH THE ANSWER

Thanking you all in advance for any help rendered (will keep my wife happy).

I would look at the ignition "X" contact relief relay. This powers most of the ignition controlled non-vital auxiliaries and is prone to solder fatigue failure - as is usual with German relays mounted on pc boards. You would have thought they would have learned how to avoid this by now.

I don't presently have access to my VAG relay reference list - maybe someone here can give you the number.

Best of luck - VAG electrical systems can be a real trial, even on the basic models.

:iagree:

It sounds like the relay to me to. If it turns out not to be this, the next thing I'd check is the earth point behind the dash.

Haynes manual 4279 for the Passat should do the job.
