No throttle response engine just ticks over on pull away

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Wonder if anyone has had this one when the car is cold on startup or warm after driving hard sometimes the engine looses all power & goes into `tickover mode' with no throttle response around 1800 rpm for about 10 seconds then recovers:eek:. No amount of throttle movement in that time cures it,this is very dangerouus at junctions & roundabouts:thumbdwn:. So far since owning the car I have replaced the MAF, coolant sensor, Bank 1 Lambda sensor, replaced sticking Forge Dump Valve with standard OE Dump Valve, repaired the secondary air pump rivets, checked some of the vacuum hoses for leaks, cleaned the ATC sensor, new platinum plugs, reset throttle body, air filter regular 3K oil changes. Have checked for fault codes but nothing.

The car is extremely fast when when it works & has been re-mapped by previous owner (police officer) but hav no ideas of which map etc. Mileage is 61K

This fault rears its ugly head from time to time say every couple of weeks for a few days then goes away.

Was not sure if it is an N75 issue, Limp Mode issue, fuel starvation partially blocked fuel filter, oiled up intercooler, dodgy ATC, Pipes under manifold block?

Any advice on this would be good as I may well be forced to get rid of this otherwise excellent car before this fault causes an accident.

Many thanks Nick

Does the check engine light come on at all?

Has the car been scanned?

The first thing I'd check is the throttle position sensor, but I'd guess there is a fault code logged.

Guess the sensor is by the pedal will have a look thanks.

No check engine light

Have scanned the car but no codes running out of ideas without spending big money at the Dealers & dont want to do that as they may well not cure the problem.

Cant see any problem with the potentiometer or connection mechanically. Wondered if anyone had any more theories on the problem. Would it be the vacuum hoses under the inlet manifold?

Similar thing happened to me about a month ago but i put it down to me starting the engine with a code reader still running (few mins before).

What happened was engine started but idle dropped to about 500 or less then it cut out. Second time i tried applying the acc pedal to raise the revs but nothing happened and it cut out again. Did a fault check and nothing came up, then 30mins after started it again and it ran completly fine. :S

Problem Sorted it was a partially blocked fuel filter:eek:!

Car now running fine

Hi Land Raver, I'm having similar problem i.e. at certain times (across many gears) I find pressing the accelerator has no impact. Usually I have to back off the accerelator and then reapply and the power kick in.

Question is...Land Raver how did you determine it was a partially blocked fuel pump? Is this something I could check myself? Just been to my mechanic and he tried to run computer diagonstics however he didn't have some password to get through the skoda firewall.

Hi Octojoe,

Basically went through all the possible common faults with great help from everyone on this Forum working out a process of elimination like MAF, Temperature Sensor, Oxygen Sensor, Spark Plugs, Air Filter. Bought a cheap ELM 327? USB to OBD2 lead & software to connect to my laptop & read/clear any fault codes. Also checked the vacuum hoses under the inlet manifold for leaks by running the engine & moving the leads about to see if there was a change in engine note, spraying starting fluid around gaskets & vacuum hoses to again see if there was a change in engine note. Found various leaks around the Secondary Air Pump rivets & inlet manifold hoses. Eventually exhausted all avenues as the problem was still there, only existed when fuel delivery was required after cold start light throttle/idle or when really hot after driving car hard. When I put Forte fuel injector cleaner in tank all hell broke loose as car got totally undriveable, that indicated dirt/blockage in fuel delivery. Changed the filter & hey presto problem gone.

Not saying it will be the same with your car but good luck. When was the last time your filter was changed?

Nick
