Advice Ref Swirls

Featured Replies

Just a quik question , i am thinking of getting an electric polisher like the Meguiars DA Polisher and was wondering how easy it is to remove light swirls & scratches from my car , also what pads / polish / bits do i need to start off :o

thanks marty

It is easy, but the product selection depends on the paint (how bad or good?).

Begin with the least abrasive (light cut) products and pads (finishing pad or polishing pad). You can get more info in online stores' product pages.... :)

The VW group car has hard paint, I use medium degree polishes against swirl removal. Also clay the paint before polishing. And seal the paint with a wax after polishing.

There is no one combination that will work on a specific brand of paint whether it be VAG, BMW or Peugeot, it's all about trial and error, starting with a light cut and stepping it up until you remove the marks on the lacquer........

I would suggest that if your looking to buy a G220 and you have a VAG car then you will need something strong as a cut, dependant on the damage but Menz or Megs will be a good start. Personally I find 3M works very well on Vag paint.........

If you guys can agree on a weekend then yeah no worries.........

smog monster - if you do end up deciding to buy your own, have a look at the Kestrel DAS 6 polisher.

I got one at Xmas, although I'm waiting for better weather before I use it.

A few others on here have got them and done reviews - do a search for "Kestrel" - and they also get favourable reports over on A world for detailers....

They are quite a bit cheaper than the Megs kit, and should certianly be adequate for a "hobby" detailer.

If you search for one of my recent threads in here 'Detailed my Fabia vRS' I documented my first use of a DA Polisher.

Results are brilliant, but for a first timer don't expect it to be a 5min job :-) Took me 20hours~.

If your not _that_ into detailing, Let Baker21 do it for you, from the work I've seen of him over at Detailing World he's a top bloke.

James.

I can also recommend the Kestrel DAS-6  Good bit cheaper than the G220, and every bit as good by all accounts.

Plus it comes with spare brushes, whereas the G220 does not...which is where many of the tales of G220 unreliability stem from.

doing 2 cars for swirls in a day would mean a very early start, and a very late finish IMO
