Fault code 17704 Help! Both Temp sensors replaced!!

Featured Replies

I have been having problems with the above fault code, it eventually brings on the CEL and can also cause difficult starting when warm, started back in July, I changed the coolant bottle and it continued so changed the engine coolant sensor and today it came back again, easy to clear with vagcom but a bit of a PIA...now both sensors are brand new and it is still returning....anyone got any ideas ( it says 'error in mapped coolant system usually coolant sensor', next to the code) could it be the thermostat?

Daver, did you find the reason for the repeated display of this fault code?

I have a car in my family that is displaying the same symtoms, and I can't sus it out!.....:rotz:.

The code shown on VAGcom is 17704 P1296 - 35 - 10 Temperature sensor/thermostat.

Timpo.

i had problem recently with p1296 error code also think it shows up on some machines as 17074 i had the temp sender and thermostat replaced that sorted it but i think it was thermostat as when i got car back and turned heaters on i could tell the difference straight away with the hot air that was coming out

Same problems that i'm having and it's given the temp gauge a mind of it's own. Does anyone have a part number for a thermostat? and price? Much appreciated

Regarding the thermostat there are a few alternatives (engine code dependent), so I need to know your engine code + year of car (just to be sure).

The 'o' ring is a common part across the range :-

Part No: 038 121 119 B (Dia 50mm x 4mm) and is about £1.25 + vat
