Rear discs definitive answer

Featured Replies

Right folks.

I'm definately going ahead with rear discs/pads as I feel a new rear cylinder coming one...

I know its been battered around before in other threads but I would like a definitive answer please.

What rear discs will go on the felly and what other parts will I need to succesfully complete this?

Thanks

Phil

ello.

i'm doing mine soon using a set of new (long story) corrado stub axles and calipers, using 16v corrado 4x100 patten discs and calipers.

the only thing you'll have to work out is connecting the setup to the brake lines. you'll need to find a flexy and and adapter so you can connect it to the old solid lines.

you may have to cut the solid lines and put a new connection in. you should be able to find some connectors of some form on the rally designs site. Professional Motorsport Parts, Spares & Rally Equipment from Rally Design

yes it can be done, sorry i can't be more detailed at the moment because i'm away working at the mo, use mk2/mk3 golf rear stub axles, mk2 gti rear discs, mk4 golf rear calipers, you'll need to make a spacer/adaptor for the handbrake cable, and you will need to alter the brake pipes slightly, your best bet is to use mk4 golf rear brake hoses and cut down the rear brake pipes to suit them, don't forget if you do cut down your brake pipes you will need a special tool to flare the ends of the pipe when you fit a new brake line fitting

corrado, mk2, and mk3 golf stub axles will all be ok and will iinterchange bewteen vehicles, it's only the discs that are different... mk2 and corrado 2.0 use 4x100, mk3 and rado vr6 use 5x100

Brilliant... knew I could count on you guys!

Will get trawling for me bits!

Got a friend not far from me I can go to as he has tonnes of tools etc i can borrow! lol

Let me know how you get on Pinkskud.

Thanks

Phil

oh, phil i forgot to ask, does yours have abs??

If those are the original brake pipes (steel?) then they'll possibly need a more expensive tool than usual. Might be easier to make up a new pipe out of kunifer.

Yes it does... forgot about that... would I need something with ABS sensors or are there not any on the back?

Phil

Yes, you'd need ABS sensors, if it can be done at all. An ABS warning light is an MOT failure.

only if you leave the bulb in there lol

Lol!

So I would need to make sure that there I get some with ABS sensors right?

Will my current rear drums have sensor wires going to them?

Thanks

whats the point if you can alegadly take the back breaks of most cars ans it wouldnt make much difference doesnt only 20% of breakin go thorough the back breaks anyway?

only if you leave the bulb in there lol

Nope if the car is fitted with ABS I believe the light has to come on, self test and go out.

No too difficult to put together a little box of tricks to make the light do that :D or even making a connection via a relay using the live while cranking wire would probably be convincing enough?!

Not that we should discuss such things of course :D

I've seen figures as low as 10% effort under emergency braking quoted.

i think it would be quicker and simpler to fix the abs rather than bodge it...

anyway, back on topic... you will need the stub axles from a mk3 golf gti wiith abs, the abs version has an extra hole for the abs sensor, you will also need the trigger wheel and sensor, iirc the triigger wheel goes on before the first bearing. you could potenially get all the parts from a breaker from the same car, but stub axles are only about £20 from german and sweedish...

also make sure you get the wires for the abs sensors in case you have to cut them, iiirc the golf sensor has a different connector to the polo/felicia, it's easy to graft on the golf connectors, it's only 3 wires per sensor, essentially the sensor is just an magnet/resistive load which has two wires which can be wired up either way, and the third wire is a signal shield/earth

the corrado's have abs to, so G60, 16v or 8v corrado discs will do. but NOT vr6

the disc is seperate from the abs trigger wheel on the golfs/rado's, afaik they all have the same rear discs except the vr6 which has 5 stud fitment

not all of them have abs though, both 5 stud and 4 stud ones use the same stub axles.. so there are 2 types, abs, and non-abs... also worth remembering that they are handed too, so if you order new ones you need to know which side of the car it is going on.... also the calipers are handed too, the hand brake lever goes at the bottom
