starter motor help needed

Featured Replies

hey lads,

away for the weekend in wales and the car has crapped out! wont start and worn turn over at all. checked the battery etc its fine so presume its the starter motor. calling the aa in the morning.

question is - will they be able to change it easily or is it a really big job? also how much am i looking at to get it replaced?

Cheers in advance

The AA are a breakdown service and provide roadside first aid. They are not there to provide garage services at no cost to you, and I wouldn't be too offended if the patrol won't change the starter motor for you. He's under a bit of pressure to get on to his next job, and cannot spend too long on one. He'll most likely diagnose the fault, get you started, fill out a form and advise you to take it to a garage.......

so they will be able to start the car if its an issue with the starter motor?

cheers

If it is the starter motor it could always be bump started with care, unless it's an automatic of course. In any case I'd expect the AA patrol to diagnose the fault and tell you how to go about getting it sorted out, but not necessarily for him to repair it there and then, especially if the starter motor needs replacing.

I used to be an AA patrol, and once upon a time we could do these things within reason. The AA isn't a 'club' anymore now though, and freebie jobs such as this are pretty much a thing of the past......

Could be the feed wire to the starter motor, happens very often on my machine, just give the connector a jiggle.

Checked all the connections and isnt that unfortunately. Managed to get it started yesterday with the help of a tow truck and a hill ;)

Dropped it outside a good indy garage near my house, just wondering what I can expect to pay? £200? more?

Cheers for the help lads

Got it sorted by an indy garage

In case anyone else needs a ball park figure, it cost me £150 inc labour and vat. Quite impressed

That's a bonus!
