clock/trip reset on start up

Featured Replies

hey all, my names ciaran, i'm new on here as just bought my first skoda there, an 04 1.9tdi and i love it but theres only one problem with it. when i start the car the clock/ trip meters all reset themselves including the radio. it only happens when i actually start the car ( i.e when i turn it off and put the key back in it shows the correct time/data until i start it and then everything zero's).

i no its not a major problem but its very annoying having to reset the clock and radio every morning before i go to work and the same on the way home ( which i gave up doin so just plug in my ipod).

has anyone had this problem, or no what it could be.

any help would be appreciated.

These functions are controlled by the central convenience unit and will be lost if the CCU loses power. Check all the fuses are intact and not loose.

The CCU is under the dash behind the headlight switch. It's a block box about the size of a pack of cards. Follow the brown wire and check there is nothing loose at the earth point it connects to.

Battery on it's way out perhaps - voltage dips enough on startup to cause issues?

It seems to me as though the fuse for the dash panel has gone. Whether it has blown or physically missing, you won't know until you check. If it is missing then I would suspect that the previous owner removed it, as the gauges on these cars sometimes drop to zero when you are driving. Use the search function and you will find more on this.

Edit:

I must read the post. Ignore the above, it looks like the battery is getting discharged, the starter motor is taking everything and there is nothing left in the battery to keep power to the trip and radio. Try charging the battery or replacing it.

thanks for advice lads, i'll try it with a new battery tomoro and see if thats the problem, i checked the fuses and the ccu and all seems to be ok.

thanks for your help.

I wonder if it's a faulty ignition switch. I have known quite a few to fail on VW's. The switch might be temporarily breaking the ignition supply when the key is turned to the start position.

Make up a test lead from two pieces of wire. Strip the ends and crimp a male spade terminal on one end of both pieces. Crimp another male spade terminal joining the other two ends together to make a 'Y' shape.

Remove the steering column cover, and then remove the multi-plug which connects into the back of the ignition switch. Identify the live supply with I think is red and in the centre of the plug. Place one end of your test lead in it and then bridge the ignition wire, and then the starter wire to start the engine. Remove the test lead from the starter wire as soon as the engine starts, and place that in the ancillary wire (lights, wipers etc.) so that you have the live supply, the ignition wire and the ancillary wire all connected together with the engine running. If your display now works as it should then you have a faulty ignition switch.......
