Hillclimbing in a Fabia VRS?

Has anyone ever sprinted or hillclimbed a fabia VRS? I am currently building a hillclimb/sprint classic mini which is now ready for a paint job but I can't justify paying up to 1k for a paint job at the mo.

I don't see why you couldn't.

Last hill climb I went too one of the guys was running his missus Tigra and another guy used his tow car (diesel Astra van) as his car broke!

I've been thinking about giving it a go myself.

People useTDi's for hill climbing because of the masive torque avalable.

I've actually read up alot on hillclimbing and have done the school at Harewood too which was a great day out. All in the mini though but the engine in the mini is built for torque.

I was just thinking of using the fabia until the mini is ready... my other mini is far too shiny to be racing up a hill!

Would be even more interesting with a Quaife/Peloquin ATB ;)

If Richard is the short bloke (same as me!) with blonde hair, who races an E-type jag and drives a black ford people carrier... then yes ;)

I can't justify paying up to 1k for a paint job at the mo.

What you spraying that in? Gold leaf?

I have just priced the paint up for my '84 Sprite in Cinnabar red and I am looking at less than a £100 for the paint, thinners, hardner and all the prep stuff.

I'm having it done by someone. Its bare metal and needs painting inside, boot, engine bay, underneath and the normal exterior. I had it shot blasted to remove all the rust so I knew where I had to weld.

I asked him about something I heard ages ago, which was that the 1.9 engine in diesel format, due to old rules raced in the 1.0 to 1.4 cat. however he broke my heart and said thats not the case at all :(

Im not bothered about doing the 'lesson' as such, dont plenty of similar things in the past, I just want to actually enter for the races, anyone got any info? I think my near on 400lb.ft might be fun :D

You'll need to join your local motor club. Then get a license which is about £40. Then all you'll need is some numbers for your doors, a timing strut, a race suit and a helmet. A sprint or hillclimb will cost you about £100 per meeting and you typically get 6 runs up the hill. 2 practice and the rest timed runs.

If you have a turbo petrol car they add 400cc to your engine capacity, so normally you end up in the class above.

i thought that applies to turbo diesels also , although not sure as it is a long time since i did the Midland speed championship in my Mini , 1999/2000

the only thing with sprint and hillclimbs , is it is expensive for the amount of track time you get , something like a sprint at 3 Sisters , 2 practise , 2 timed runs , less than 4 minutes on the track when its the single lap circuit :thumbdwn: and hanging around all day for your turn

See what you mean, im not made of money, but do want to get into some for of professional racing in my TDi, what would you say is the best bang for your buck as such?

any motorsport will be expensive these days , unless you have a sponsor or a rich parent

not racing , but the best bang for buck track time is an open pitlane track day

I might have to do something about my exhaust system, ive done track days before, but struggle to find a track that will let me on with the exhaust :(

The MSA is the motor sport governing body in the UK. their site will have a list of car clubs.

Don't just pick your nearest club, find one that has active members competing in the same sort of events you want to do - some will be mainly rallying, others circuit racing etc.

Are your helmet and race suit up to current spec? If not then don't underestimate how much it will cost to get them, motorsport is very expensive and the MSA don't help matters when certain safety items have a shelf life, so just because it has never been used it could still be out of date and unusable.

As i say find a club local to you who have active sprinting or hillclimbing members and pop along to a club night and talk to a few of them, they will put you in the picture with regard to the costs.

Exactly, just buy one with the latest MSA spec :thumbup:

Great stuff, will look into this more when I have the car back on the road and used to driving it again me thinks (and when I have more money!)
