anyone with a greenline want a free wheels upgrade ?

Featured Replies

serious offer - i want 16" wheels with 91H tyres. Anyone with a greenline fancy some 17" wheels ? I am willing to do a swap at no cost.

I have some other wheels lined up but tyres are not suitable so will cost me a bit. An Exhange seems sensible.

When i come to sell my car I might buy another superb and thus can swap the wheels onto my new car thus getting the elegance back to elegance spec !

I suggest that you put this under the "Wanted" section.

You'll scupper yourself when you come to sell yours though! A straight purchase would be the best way forward, IMHO. Then keep the proper 17s in storage.

Steve.

i disagree.

If i go to a dealer in 4 yrs time and want to buy a new superb I am sure they will not walk away form a deal just cos I have smaller wheels. I am sure we could work out a plan !! Indeed I could simply move my wheels across to the new car and then put the new 18" wheels on the car I am trading in. (there again they will probably be in 22" rims and 20 profile tyres by then if the trend continues !!)

I buy my cars to enjoy them and live with them - i dont look to the resale position all the time. I will cross that bridge when i come to it (afterall I will need to either shell out for new wheels now or shell out in the future. better to try and make it part of the deal when i trade in as it might not cost me as much !)

Fair enough. Have you considered contacting the dealer and see if anything can be sorted? Take a set of 16s from something currently on sale and then that car effectively gets a free wheel upgrade sitting on the forecourt?

Problem is that the dealer hasnt got a greenline or S model in stock or on order. also my wheels will be judged as second hand as they have done 1500 miles. I suppose i could see if they have nay used cars on the forecourt that might want a free wheel upgrade. I will investigate.thanks

I think its fundamental that you give some 16s a go before committing to anything. I can't honestly believe that the difference is so night and day. Surely as the suspension ages and beds in the ride will become more supple.

Have you tried experimenting with tyre pressures??

tom - thanks for your input. I have actually given it a go as I agree it is necessary to check the theory is born out in practice

I have a passat with 16" wheels that have the same PCD as the skoda. I took it to my local kwik fit on sunday and we put the 16" wheels on the skoda. It was an instant and noticable improvement. its not just the size but the extra load as well. The 16" tyres have 11mm of extra sidewall plus they are 91H rated and not 94V XL. You can tell the difference by simply pressing your finger into the sidewall . The XL tyres as like wood wherea the non-XL tyres have some give in them (both on the same pressures). I am already running the 17" tyres at lower than recommended pressure (30psi i think) but the difference between 33/34 and 30 is not that noticeable.

The improvement in ride is noticed when hitting imperfections in the road. The extra softness the tyres provides a little more "suspension" and the bump is not transmitted into the cabin as much. Also , paradoxically, the ride is also imporved on a very smooth surface. The high frequency vibrations (i call it "jitteryness") that i can feel though the armrest and door armrest with my 17" wheels on is not there with the 16" wheels on. I summise this is to do with the softer sidewalls that will absorb some of the vibation and transmit as much to the chassis.

I fully accept that I am perhaps more sensitive to these issues that other people (OK call me totally anal if you like !! LOL) but it is the difference between the superb being good and being very good for me - thus i consider it worth the effort and expense !

Me and Jonathan have bantered over this subject more than once, but to give Jonathan his due as driver of a new Superb on 18s I can vouch that the ride is pretty hard.

I personally quite like it, especially as I do a lot of motorway miles where the ride is excellent, but around town on poor sufaces the ride is pretty jarring. I can see how annoying it could be to some people. For me however the wheels make the car look great. Vain I know but I wouldn't like to be greeted with the sight of 16" tiddlers every time I returned to my car!

I actually think the 18" look silly the more i see them . They look like someone has injected the wheels with steriods !!! Actually i think the 17" are the best for the car asthetically although my wife and I did not think the 16" looked ridiculous. afterall the gap above the tyre to the arch is the same no matter what size the wheels are.

Its obviosuly all about personal preference. I am a pragmatist and not at all vain (if i was vain i woudl have bought an Audi and paid £8k more !!!). I have spent sometime looking at wheels and tyres on all the cars I see on the road this week and not once have i thought "look at that prat there with 15" wheels" but I have to say I have thought on several occasions "look at the nice high profile tyres on that car - bet he gets a comfy ride !!!". There are millions of cars on the road and I dont think for one minute my life will be disadvantaged by having 16" wheels whereas i will be disadvantaged if I dont (ie i will not FEEL happy with my car !!

horses for courses and all that:)

now i just need to sort the muppets of the insurance world out before i swap the wheels !

I would never look at a car and think "look at that prat with 15" wheels" I would just look and think "that car doesn't look very good"...one of the best examples of this is the BMW 5 series, the look of the car is pretty much determined by the wheel size.

Of course all IMHO, and I suspect most others. As you say horses for courses.

sorry "prat" was probably a bit strong wasnt it !!! :o

The thing in most cars I see are moving so the size of wheels is irrelevant. I saw a 7 series the other bay and it had massive wheels - maybe 20" and very skinny tyres. I know its a big car (infact i never realised how big until i saw this one in a standard parking space and it stuck out a long way !) but it looked wrong. I think you can go too big on the wheels. Now i know 16" wheels woudl look utterly ridiculous on a 7 series - maybe 18" is the correct size for such a big car.

I spend most of my "superb" time actually driving the car rather than looking at it so the aesthetic aspect is less important to me. Saying that - I am spending a bit of time getting some wheels that look OK - i dont want to just get the 1st 16" wheels I come across and I am not keen on the standard skoda ones as they are almost identical to the ones we had for the last 6 yrs on our Audi (so I do have a little bit of vanity )

Most 5 Series I see in the UK are in black with gangster glass and excessive wheel/tyre combinations. It is widely known that the 5 Series is better to drive when fitted with modest wheel/tyres giving a better ride and still looking aesthetically pleasing .

and of course they will insist on putting those stupid "runflat" tyres on which I believe totally ruin the ride !
