Have i diagnosed this correctly?

Featured Replies

Hi all, just wondered if anyone could offer a sanity check on diagnosis before i go changing parts...

About 3 months ago i posted about a high pitched "wail" when doing hill starts under load, and suggestions seem to be the CV joints were under straing as the gearbox mount was corroded and allowing the engine to rock.

Of course, last time i was under the car i neglected to check it (cold and dark at the time) and have not got around to sorting the issue.

Now, yesterday, i start to here a pulsating noise from the nearside front, only when turning right. I was on a 250 mile round-trip on motorways, and on the way back today it started to become more audible. There is also a similar (but much quieter) noise from the offside. The noise is not there when i run straight, but even with the slightest lean to the right is starts to become apparent.

So, my diagnosis is that because i neglected the mount, i've managed to excessivly wear the CV joints? So, i need to replace the mount and two joints... sound reasonable?

My questions i guess are:-

1. Does it sound like the logical conclusion?

2. How hard are the joints to change? Engine mount looks easy from haynes, but CV joints (with ABS) not so easy. Could i do it in the morning i have off work tomorrow?

Car is a 2000 1.9 TDi SLX (110).

Hey folks - anyone any thoughts on this? Things slip down the forum fast around here...!

Also could be the wheel bearings, is the noise when you change direction a kind of drone?

Not so much a drone as a "pulse" I've has rear bearings go before and the sound is similar, but different if you see what i mean! I guess i'll go for bearings if it's not the CV joints!

Anyone have any comment on how easy/ difficult all these bits are to fit...
